buying/registering/inspecting an OBDI Can. car?

So im looking to sell the speed and get back into the subie community.

i have found a ver.8 sti swapped 1998 GC8 located about an hour from. buffalo in ontario.
this car is immaculate and im very interested in it, but i wanted to ask of this bright community someQs.

1.) with the Ver.8 swap being JDM the car has no OBD ports except for possibly the OG OBD1 port. how will this affect getting it reg.'d and insp’d?

2.) what steps are involved with getting a Canadian car reg.'d/insp.'d here in the good 'ole U.S.of A?

3.) is the fact that it is OBD1 and Canadian going to make it harder to americanize it?

the reason im asking is because at work i have little time to search for things on the internet and i have no internet at home.
thanks in advance for the help.

because its a 98, it will have to pass whatever obd2 emissions were for the stock motor.

You’re pretty much fucked if it can’t pass the OBDII crap…

probably only a little less illegal than regging a skyline here…

dual citizenship… thats how lol

You can always buy a second car to get “inspected”

ie you would have to probably buy another 98 2.5rs to hook up to the OBD II port…

its not gonna be easy, one of the reasons i sold my tib

Yeah but how are you going to register and insure it?

is this the black one thats been for sale for some time? w/the big front mount? killer looking car. but the inspection crap makes things difficult once a year.

i dont really know how important the sticker being for the correct car is yet.

there are many local & state cops with the Plate reading cameras in the cars.

but the DMV dosent even know that i moved 3 years ago cause i didnt want to pay for a new license. i cant really see the DMV seeing the vin tag from one inspected subaru to another. unless you were in a wreck and hurt someone. and the accident came from a faulty safety thing in the car… brakes/airbags/steering. and they went after the shop who inspected the car.

 Get caught swapping a VIN on a car…its only a felony and they take the car.

by the time you are done, you would probably be better off building the car yourself.

Car will not pass an inspection. Not worth the hassel. On top of that when it comes time to re-register the vehicle DMV checks to see if it has been inspected in the past 18 months. if not they will not allow it to be re-registered until proof of inspection. The plugging into a different car is soooo not a good idea. it will go thru but will cause a problem. Trust me.
Under normal circumstances you cannot register a canadien car here in NYS unless it meets calif emissions/50 state. The 49 state verisons (96 and newer) are not allowed.

Not worth it, many reasons why I never even had a thought in my head of the swap in my GC.

Isn’t this going to be registered outside of NY?

i’m not sure of the logistics but i’ve heard what most people are doing is hooking up the needed sensors and what not of the OBDII harness to pass inspection as well as running the OBDI harness to actually operate the car. maybe try talking to innovative about it? i know they are running a swapped GC, but I am assuming they probably used a USDM motorset.

yea it will be in pa.

the car is a stock entire Ver.8 sti driveline(minus and HKS turbo-back with cat) and has no check engine lights. but it a jdm motorset.

and its blue not black

i wasnt swapping a vin just an inspection sticker.

isnt the Ver8 the usdm sti? if its the japan 2L one couldnt you get a computer from a USDM car? or there that many sensors that are missing?

I remember some hearsay that buying a late 90’s car from canada CAN possibly make things easier, since if it was manufactured for canada, they didnt make the switch from obd1 to obd2 the same time as the USA, so some cars in the 96-99 years are grandfathered to the OBD1 inspection laws…(this MAY only be for the likes of say, GMC and such, not sure about imported cars)

wat??? Clue much??The only exemption after 96 was a few F250/350 that ford mislabeled the vin as being OBDII when they were actually obdI. The only other exemption is a “custom” IE: kit cars such as ac cobra’s etc…but they are registered as customs

NOTICE I SAID THAT IT WAS HEARSAY AND THAT I HAD NO REAL IDEA IF ANY PART OF IT WAS TRUE

I was merely stating that it was something I heard that maybe he could look into whether or not it was true

In theory couldn’t you do that to register something like a skyline, just have it shipped over in parts from a guy in canada?
