I just got the D40 with both of the lense’s and <3 it. I have held and used both Canon and Nikon and I really just like Nikon more. I would check both at like Ritz Camera in Galleria and see which one you like more.
Im partial to cannon, but I’ve never used either, many people use the D40 though and have great things to say about it, Im sure you can go wrong with it.
The Xti may get slightly better pictures, but considering the price, and the fact that you are gettin the 55-200 lens and still under the price of the XTi, it’s a very easy choice IMO. If it was camera to camera, it’d be harder desicion, and I may suggest the XTi, but long term, you can always keep the Nikon lenses, and upgrade the body down the road once you are more comfortable with the camera.
I had the d40x, loved it, and just ordered another Nikon. Nikon is alot more durable than the rebels. Rebels feel cheap and fragile in your hands.
You have to keep in mind that those internet “steals” you see on cameras have a few problems with them.
When the Camera combo is THAT cheap it means the camera doesn’t come with a battery/charger ($150.00) or a memory card. You need a high-speed memory card at least 1gb ($60.00+)
Most of those internet Camera shops are in NYC, which means , sales tax!
Trust me on the pricing games they play, they got me too.
I bought a D40x with a 55-200mm AF-S VR lens for around 600 bucks. I was excited to say the least.
A few hours later I get an email saying to call a 1-800 number to confirm the order, so I figured, no biggie. I call the number and they ask me for the 3 digits on the back of the credit card to confirm the order. I tell them and then the salesman is like “So…what kind of battery did you want to go with? We have the 2-hour battery for $149.99, but right now for a limited time we have the 5-hour with a charger for $179.99”, I was like oh fuck, so I got the 5-hour…then he told me “So…what memory card did you want to go with, ya know you need the high-speed card right? We have a 1-GB card for $79.99 but right now for a limited time we have the 2 GB card for $99.99, yada yada yada”, I was not so happy, lol, then he tried to sell me an extended warranty, some filters, you name it, lol.
All in all, my killer 600 dollar deal turned into an $850 dollar deal.
