Bah, what happened to the old days when fans were just belt driven and that was the end of it?
Its called sounding like an Airplane aint cool.
Bah…my Caprice or Towncar never sounded like an airplane. More like wounded meece.
I suppose v8’s need the constant cooling of the fans whereas the smaller motors would cool off too much if they ran constantly.
Did the caprice rev to 7000 rpm?
Well, it had no tach so it was hard to tell, but my guess is that it probably wasn’t allowed to rev past about 5500, again no tach in the Lincoln but I’d guess around the same redline. The only 7000 rpm domestic v8’s that I am aware of were the ones in the '69 Camaro z28 T/A package - the 302 small block.
Not sure what the redline of a car would have to do with having an electric fan or not.
That was an amazing car, most people always say that the Camaro never had a 302 till i give them the info.
Yeah - it’s funny, even a lot of camaro guys don’t know a ton about that car. Probably because out of all the musclecars of the era, that was one of the few that could actually corner properly. Or at least, as properly as a Camaro was liable to do, anyway.
It’s cause ya get confused as soon as someone says 302, right away I think of a Ford motor not a GM. Had a 302 in my Mustang GT and my 82 Z28 had the 305.
Yeah, the caprice had a 305 - but that motor was a pig. It didn’t have any of the goodies that the 302 motor had, and with all the emissions controls, reduced compression ratios, and reduced timing advance the power just wasn’t there. My Sentra is supposed to make as much at the crank as the caprice had, though significantly less torque.
Oh, and if it wasn’t obvious by now, I’ll say to whoever started this thread:
“Bitch, get yo f*ck’n ass out the thread…you gettin’ jacked! Don’t make me step off and come out blastin’”
Finally fixed that damn thing! Belts needed tightening but the fan clutch seized up too. So I picked up the used one nis_mo had for sale yesterday. Put it on today and now my car doesn’t sound like a damn airplane. Those four nuts on the pully are a bitch to get off though, goddayum.
All said and done it was totally worth it. I really like working on my car, I saved myself a fat wad of cash and I’d forgotten how much I enjoy the sound of my little KA. Especially near the top 8)
