It’s rare enough to catch a glimpse of a black bear in these parts.
More bizarre is crashing into one � but that’s exactly what happened to an unlucky motorist Friday night on the Aurora Expressway in the Town of Aurora.
The driver of a Pontiac Grand Prix, headed north on the expressway at about 9 p.m., collided with the bear just south of the Route 20A overpass, Officer Darren Longboat said.
The driver, whom police did not identify, was unharmed.
The bear was killed.
“It was like a straightforward car-deer accident, but it happened to be a bear,” Longboat said.
East Aurora police last had a report of a bear sighting about three years ago, not far from where the accident occurred, said Longboat.
The bear that was hit appeared to be older than a cub, but not quite a full-grown bruin, he added.
While an oddity in Erie County, car-bear accidents happen with some regularity in Cattaraugus County.
“We get a couple of those a year,” said a dispatcher with the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.
The collisions usually occur in the towns of Carrollton or Allegany, near the Pennsylvania border, the dispatcher said.

could you imagine if it didn’t kill the bear and instead just pissed him off causing him to grab your car and flip it over. What does the driver hand book say to do if that happens?

i would have it skinned and make into a rug. that would make a funny story when guests would ask me why theres a bear rug on my floor.
edit- that officer has given me tickets before in my civic too, then i proceeded to show off my illegal bike right in the village. he’s actually pretty cool though.

Its possible, Ive read articles about people who have shot bears and had them drop only to walk up to them and have the bullet had ricocheted off the skull and they wake up and maul them.
kill the bear and then stand there humping it when the cops walk up.

He’s my girlfriend’s uncle. It is an Indian name and he is a really cool guy. Reason he probably didn’t hassle you over the bike is because he rides. He has a couple bikes and I think he even rides dirt track (moto-x) too.

Yeah he is native. My buddies (who are EA cops) told me about this Saturday. Since I was a kid people have talked about seeing bears in the Lapham Road area which is not far from there, which is also not too, too far from me.
On another wildlife note: I just got video of a coyoyte right outside my house, he was being chased by a fox that has pupps nearby! A friend had a coyote in his yard yesterday afternoon that didn’t seem to be bothered by the lawnmower noise. lol!
I keep my camera nearby at all times and have gotten video of just about everything except a bear. Someday.
