I just recently switched from the Thera 2032:
to the Samsung I600 on Verizon.
As a HEAVY PDA user I need to bring lists of contacts and appointments with me on the go (300+), I also like using my phone as an mp3 & movie player which meant I had to have an SD card, wifi connectivity & bluetooth would be a plus for me but not neccisary… so I started looking at Verizon phones and found out the I600 could be had for relativly cheap (Picked mine up on ebay for ~100 (They range form 100-200).
First and foremost: This phone runs Windows smartphone, made for phones that do not have full keayboards, or touch screens. Which is fine because my old phone was E-FUCKING-nourmous, i was most concerned that I wanted something SMALL and something that didnt look like i was talking into a graphing calculator…
So I get the phone, the good news:
Sync with outlook is flawless, remote outlook sync is available from verizon, data flows at upwards of 200kbps constantly and I can tether it to my laptop and use data from it flawlessly, even works on the go while in the car, keeping the same IP as I transfer from tower to tower etc…
Music works great with my gig sd card and all is well, music plays fine and volume levels are perfect…
The bad:
No keyboard, text input sucks, especially when trying to reply to emails, so I bought this:
perfect solution, waterproof, flexible, and rolls up into a pouch…
Custom ringtones: The i600 was one of the first smartphones, and for whatever reason the custom ringer ID’s don’t work, i can change my main ringer, but if i assign a rintone to someone, it doesnt work, the cheapest piece of crap phone can do this, but not my PDA? sad but true, microsoft and samsung know this, and they point fingers to eachother, no one has fixed it yet.
Windows media player: No ability to scan forward or back in tracks (useful with audio books) media player only plays mp3, wma, and wmv… does NOT play mpeg or avi divx etc (Easily fixed with other software)
NO avantgo, this kills me, i LOVED avantgo and used it constantly… hopefully it will come out soon
SD WIFI cards dont work, no SD mfg have written drivers for smartphone…
Overall: Like the phone, gives me a pda without the HUGE phone, has a flip and batterylife is great, I miss some old ppc software and touchscreen, but size overcomes the drawbacks… ringtones are fun, but i have it set for vibrate 90% of the time anyways…
