Cell Phone Review: I600

I just recently switched from the Thera 2032:

to the Samsung I600 on Verizon.

As a HEAVY PDA user I need to bring lists of contacts and appointments with me on the go (300+), I also like using my phone as an mp3 & movie player which meant I had to have an SD card, wifi connectivity & bluetooth would be a plus for me but not neccisary… so I started looking at Verizon phones and found out the I600 could be had for relativly cheap (Picked mine up on ebay for ~100 (They range form 100-200).

First and foremost: This phone runs Windows smartphone, made for phones that do not have full keayboards, or touch screens. Which is fine because my old phone was E-FUCKING-nourmous, i was most concerned that I wanted something SMALL and something that didnt look like i was talking into a graphing calculator…

So I get the phone, the good news:

Sync with outlook is flawless, remote outlook sync is available from verizon, data flows at upwards of 200kbps constantly and I can tether it to my laptop and use data from it flawlessly, even works on the go while in the car, keeping the same IP as I transfer from tower to tower etc…

Music works great with my gig sd card and all is well, music plays fine and volume levels are perfect…

The bad:

No keyboard, text input sucks, especially when trying to reply to emails, so I bought this: http://www.aftermarketcellular.com/cart/images/pcs/AKB120KLEG.gif
perfect solution, waterproof, flexible, and rolls up into a pouch…

Custom ringtones: The i600 was one of the first smartphones, and for whatever reason the custom ringer ID’s don’t work, i can change my main ringer, but if i assign a rintone to someone, it doesnt work, the cheapest piece of crap phone can do this, but not my PDA? sad but true, microsoft and samsung know this, and they point fingers to eachother, no one has fixed it yet.

Windows media player: No ability to scan forward or back in tracks (useful with audio books) media player only plays mp3, wma, and wmv… does NOT play mpeg or avi divx etc (Easily fixed with other software)

NO avantgo, this kills me, i LOVED avantgo and used it constantly… hopefully it will come out soon

SD WIFI cards dont work, no SD mfg have written drivers for smartphone…

Overall: Like the phone, gives me a pda without the HUGE phone, has a flip and batterylife is great, I miss some old ppc software and touchscreen, but size overcomes the drawbacks… ringtones are fun, but i have it set for vibrate 90% of the time anyways…

should of gotten an Imate phone, small and top of the line, but def not 100 bucks.

i had an imate smartphone, b4 i bought my pda/phone. It was ok, but the screen sucked balls, no true VGA.

with as much abuse as my phone takes, im not going to spend big $$

cheapness was DEF a factor here

i roffled at graphing calc

and to be honest with tethering it for data all the PDA functions im missng from not having a touch screen are 11tybillion times better cause i can just use the laptop…

with just my laptop + usb cable + phone i can go online anywhere for 3 hours before the laptop needs power again… very nice…

EDIT: I don’t anymore, but used to DJ for friends parties and stuff, this is the best thing ever for a dj, if anyone has a request and you dont have it hop on limewire p2p etc and grab it instantly… very cool

thats why i sold my pda/phone and bought a dell axim x50v, VGA screen and my phone is now small again

word, ive done that at airports before when i was waiting for a connecting flight. beats paying $10 for wifi

i just can’t get carry 2 devices around, i loose shit constantly

I got a option to dump my V710 from verizon because of the bluetooth lawsuit. I dont want to switch from verizon. I will be needing a new phone though, my 710 is on its way out due to the charger hookup.

I dont even see the i600 on verizon’s website as a listed phone, and your picture of it is says its a Sprint Phone. Can you buy other phones from other carriers and use them with your own like buying a cingular phone and using it with verzion???

NO sorry i used a sprint picture they sell it for verizon too, its an older model (maybe 1-2 years old?) so it may not be available for NEW purchase, if i were you I would look for verizon SMARTphones, i HATE HATE HATE motorolla because EVERY moto phone I have had has the charger crap out… you can pick up an i600 on ebay cheap, or you can also try a verizon re-seller…

see another thing: I am cheap, there is no way im spending more than 100 on a phone, so I always get my shit on ebay… if you are buying direct from verizon you can only buy one of their current models

im not a big fan of moto either.

althought the 815 is much better, it still has the same charger. and its pretty easy to hack the bluetooth(so ive heard)

and the i600 is an older phone, its not going to be listed from verizon. best bet is ebay, just be careful who you buy from, you dont want to get stuck with a stolen phone

Yeah 815 is very easy to hack

nice phone IMHO

lightyears ahead of the 710

My Treo is good, i am too tired to write a writeup like yours right now

i just did it cause i was bored

i was planning on getting a treo 650, but i’m waiting for the 700w - I’ve been a treo user since 01 and i plan on staying as one for a long time.

More info on this option? Is this for all Verizon V710 users? Because if it is, I will look into changing my phone too.

I like the treo 650 a lot

never mind
