CFR drag sled - because going fast in a car is too boring for me

I don’t think it could go any lower…you cant put your foot under the belly pan without hitting it lol.

dropped off the stand and clutch tools for powdercoat last night.

the stand is going to be limelight with gold dust topcoat(metallic lime green), and the clutch tools will be ash sparkle(metallic gray). figure Im paying for powder regardless of color so why not have fun with the colors. these will most likely be the primary colors I use from now on for snowmobile tools and whatnot.

got my stuff back from powder coat. love the green, not sure about the gray. might have it done a different color when I have more stuff powder coated. working OT today then heading to the garage when I get home.

This thing is pretty badass.

Mean green

was working on this last night and finally figured out my fuel/electrical issue. turns out BOTH Boondocker fuel controllers I have went bad. disconnected the boondocker system and plugged in injectors like stock and it runs fine (although lean lol) so it looks like i need a new fuel controller.

I’m going to go with the Power Commander V this time. It is $400 plus I need a laptop to adjust fuel maps and I’ll have to pay for more dyno time to retune the sled but the nice part is they are less problematic and I can adjust timing with it. So I will take timing key out and replace with stock one. I can have stock timing at idle so I can use engine reverse again, advance timing a bunch at midrange to increase torque, then pull it back on top to keep rpm up for more speed. The fuel also has more incremental rpm adjustments which is nice.

Anyone want to buy me a fuel controller? Haha

Wish I could help. Fuel controller on the Stang is broken as it seems like I fill it up every third time I drive it. Still wanna see vids on this machine.

I think that may be a driver issue :stuck_out_tongue:

Plan to come out to Lancaster later this summer  I should be out there testing by July.

I have 2 waterproof 1080p cams (similar to gopro) that I can use for video recording. Parents got me one for my birthday not realizing my gf got me the same thing for Christmas haha. I plan to mount one with the handlebar clamp on an A arm, maybe mount the other on rear of sled.

Looks like this.

scheduled a tuning session at dynotech research for july 7th. buying the power commander v through jim there as well as a package deal with the dyno tune. with being able to adjust timing compared to just fuel and the timing key before I should be able to increase midrange torque with more timing and pull it out on top for higher rpm and peak hp.

I have removed all the boondocker wiring and module, also removed the heated shield hookup(why do I still have this on a race sled? lol)

also the wheels came in for my track stand so I got those on

Looking good. One of our riding buddies knows Jim well. Says good things. Did a bunch of testing on his Pro-Ride with RKT’s forged piston kit and Boyesen’s new prototype reed cage a few months ago.

 I like the boyesen setup. I have VF3 right now but want to swap to the aluminum setup. maybe when I add the turbo I will make the switch. This next appt. will be my 4th time on the dyno with this sled. lol.

Andy @1QIKZ, speaking of mad scientists and scales, im trying to find ways of lightening this sled up more without turning it into a stripped down POS like many do with race sleds.

Well I got the sled tuned with the new fuel controller. $750 later, I left still unable to get to the track.

The sled is tuned, but down on power. 20hp in the midrange, 5hp on top, and down 5 ftlbs as well. Some things not right. That’s a lot to lose for a small engine whose peak was 230hp. Also noticed the sled acted up once like it was before with the fuel/electrical issue. Apparently there was more than just the Boondocker that wasn’t right.

Been checking things over, and found that the PTO cylinder is down 30% compression compared to MAG cylinder. I’m going to double check again today, but it looks like whatever problem I was having ended up hurting the motor. At the very least, I’ll need to do hone and rings with gaskets… But still have an electrical gremlin.

Here’s the graph showing the fuel spiking when the sled would act up. As you can see it was getting an insane amount of extra fuel, which was making the computer thing there was a ton more airflow, yet the power was down considerably. The PTO side pipe was considerably colder too after that. I’m down to thinking it’s either being a stator timing sensor (2 at $150 a pop, no way of knowing which one) or a break in wiring (insulation is ok) between the ECU and the PTO injector.

Here’s the graph showing that the sled is down on power. We overlaid a graph from last year(in red) with current (black). Less compression, curve shifts…

And another one showing the torque is down too.

At this point, I’m beyond frustrated with this sled. Over a year now of scratching my head with this electrical issue, and now I find that sometime over the last 8-12 months the motor was hurt. I haven’t even been to the track in close to 2 years now. Right now I feel like the entire electrical system from bumper to bumper needs to be replaced to make certain all gremlins are gone, and who knows what I will do with the motor. I wanted to run this thing for a year or two then go to a turbo down the road. A freshen up might be doable, but a full rebuild is out of the question. This thing will probably end up getting pushed in the corner for a while. I have one more semester of school and this upcoming year’s taxes to pay for before I can dump anymore money in this thing.

Artic Scrap. Been frustrated like this before too.

^^ out of all the sleds I’ve raced or owned, this is the first one to ever give me problems. This one is just making up for the trouble free years I’ve had lol.

Decided to redo my compression test. Both cylinders dead nuts even at 145 psi.

Already did a quick check of crank phase…that seems OK, but I would figure that as its already been welded. I’m gonna yank the vf3 reeds out. They looked OK on camera but maybe I missed something.

haven’t been here in a while. had a senior design project and a diagnostic exam to finish so i could get out of engineering school for good.

game plan for the next few months is lengthy. going to yank the motor and go through it, replace motor mounts, relocate coolant quick disconnects, remove rear heat exchanger and rewire entire sled. will make another stop at the dyno come spring time to see if i can make any more power (might be making some changes while the motor is out). also have a trailer to build but i am determined to get back to the track this year, hoping to be there first day of test and tune.

sometime in the fall i did get a chance to tinker with the sled a little…took out about 5 lbs from trimming off more of the inside of gas tank shell and removing tunnel protectors. i hope to drop another 5 lbs by removing the rear heat exchanger and cleaning up the wiring.

did some preseason maintenance the other week on a couple yellow turds. now its time to focus on my cfr

initial sketch of my trailer…need to make some changes.

Yellow turds for sure.

I doubt this is your problem, but I’ve seen the fly wheel magnets come loose, causing all sorts of weird random issues.
