One of our readers pointed us tothis pageover at Dodge’s website that contradicted our earlier post about the 2008 Challenger SRT-8’s pricing, which was originally announced at $37,995 (including the $675 destination charge). We realize that inflation is a cruel mistress, but a bump in the sticker to $40,095 left us scratching our heads. A few emails back and forth between the people at Chrysler revealed that the SRT-8 was slapped with a $2100 gas-guzzler penalty that accounted for the discrepancy in price. Not a real surprise considering the 425 hp 6.1-liter HEMI V8. As a comparison, however, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 gets a $1300 consumption penalty, even with 75 more horses under the hood. A quick search over at fueleconomy.gov revealed that if Challenger SRT-8 owners are penalized $2100, that means that they’ll also only be getting between 18.5 and 19.5 mpg in the combined cycle. We doubt that’ll be a deterrent, but it’s food for thought.
Once the dealers get these they’ll prolly sell in the 45 - 50 range (:picard: ) for a couple years… stagnating the market and making Chrysler think its a poor choice.
I’d bet that the entry level cars will sell en mass to alot of fleet use… and hopefully the mid-level cars will respond well to the aftermarket. Cause in looking at this, not too promising for Chrysler.
Then again, they’ve been kicking ass in overall use & sales with their last couple of platforms. So hopefully they have gotten this mix right again.
whoa a 2100$ fine per vehicle?
forget that
the cars ugly, windows too small, body too big, like a minicooper
whats with the HUGE back up lights?
and round mirrors on a notveryround car?
it looks like a mustang
GM hasn’t posted any prices yet but they state that it will be competitively priced with the Challenger and the Mustang. But that’s the number that I am waiting for, Blue with white rally stripes. To kick the crap out of Nelstoys Challenger

umm…what company uses a 2 door for a fleet car?
It is priced well…this is made to compete against cars like the Mustang GT500 , and Camaro 1LE or what ever they call the one they want to put the z06 motor in…
I think the v6 camaro would be around 22…and the 6.0/6.2 v8 somewhere around 29 …then you will prolly pay 45ish for the zo6 beast…
So what this means is they will still sell a million mustangs, 1/2 a million camaros, and 1/4 million challengers…thats my guess lol
Joe my new challenger will not be stock by any means, and you don’t have the time with your 69 project to make a new camaro beat out a killer hemi!!! LoL By the time Chevy releases the camaro my car will have been broken in and ready to kick azz.
Ps: The GN waits patiently to kick that big blocks azz.
