Say I was gonna buy a Blu-Ray player for the folks for Christmas. Do I just get a BD player or do I get them a PS3 40GB? Sony’s BDP-S300 is the same price as the 40GB PS3 but you can do more with the PS3. Whatch’all think?
parents prolly wont find any use for the ps3 and will think that you bought them a video game console, not a blu-ray player.
thats how my folks see it.

why not buy them the winning format, HD-DvD

I haven’t decided on which HD format I am going to get them but this will seal the deal for them to get a new TV right quick instead of dragging their feet. The Toshiba HD-A30 (HD-DVD Player) is $313 shipped so I might end up going that route. Haven’t decided yet, basically but I wanted to just throw it out there.
I’m not sure of your family situation but im assuming at one point your parents will be grandparents so it may just be a hd-dvd player right now but could become much more useful later on.
Edit: that gives my vote to the PS3

I see where you are going but we are talking PS4 when something like that is gonna happen. Good point regardless.
