LOL. Intermediate AXLE shaft.

Yeah, not the steering shaft.

That was replaced last year. :rofl

how many times has GM replaced your car?

Cant believe how shitty these things are made. Fuck this car is a few years old with all these problems…

Haha that’s what i’m saying!!

Lololol and I thought my '06 G6 GTP was a piece of shit! Speaking of that car, I have a problem that is very similar currently. The car has 55k on it, and the front passenger side has a major clunk in it. It might just be a sway bar end-link in my case, but I haven’t gone through it too much to figure it out.

On a similar note, my mother in-law’s '06 Saturn Vue has to be the worst quality vehicle I have ever been near.

She was brushing snow off of it and the windows molding snapped off (January 07). She had the brakes replaced twice (horrible design), the windshield replaced (air leaks on highway), exhaust replaced within the first month (exhaust rattled against the vehicle) and countless other things. More recently I have noticed her wipers just randomly turn on and stop half way in the middle of the windshield. It only has MAYBE 50k on it! It’s a big flop of shit!

In contrast, my Z28 has 110k and has NEVER needed a replacement part other than a steering pump and that was from major abuse on my part.

GM, I sure hope you have stepped your game up…

The car has been in two accidents. One, obviously my fault, and the other when the car was less than a year old.

First accident, the car was in the hands of a local GM dealer and someone hit the driver side quarter and fucked up the rear end as well. :facepalm

A car is a machine, a mechanical and electrical piece of equipment. It will wear out with use just like anything else out there.

On the plus side, the car is pretty fun to drive and moves pretty good. With just a few simple mods like bigger injectors, smaller pulley, and HP Tuners, you’ll be amazed at what cars you can keep up with in the Cobalt.

I’m still not getting another GM after this one, though. :lol Unless it’s a full-size truck.

Hell if I had known GM made replacement rockers and fuel/brake lines for my old Z24 (dealer said they were discontinued), I would have just kept that!

You find out what it was yet?

I’m almost positive that it’s the intermediate shaft bearing. The packing is flung out of it, has some mild play to it, and makes a faint howling sound at speed, not to mention the moderate vibration at highway speeds. And it is NOT the wheel bearing as those are new, have no play in them (vert or horizontal), and I know what those pieces of SHIT sound like when they go.

Have you got it sorted out? Just wondering.

It’s the axle I-shaft bearing.

Still haven’t gotten around to fixing it, lol. It’s actually a warranty item so all I theoretically need to do is bring it to the dealership. I’ll probably end up doing it myself though since I would rather avoid going there by any means necessary.

2 things

  1. i have been through 2 of these things, if it keeps getting worse it will look like this
    http://www.rspeed.org/forums/gallery/data/511/medium/Picture_018.jpg

  2. you need to replace the entire intermediate shaft assembly. they don’t make just bearings. this is a common problem with these cars. but not common enough for a regular tech to think of at first.

i think i might even have a b.n.i.b one under my bed for when i need to replace my next one

+1 for buttercup.

Fuckin Cobalt SUPER SHIT!

Crate engine depot sells the bearing.

I really, really, really do not want to take it to a chevrolet dealership to get fixed.

So fuckin suplex a bearing on that bitch and call it a day

Got jackstands? It’s not hard to do…

make sure to grab some trans fluid. you loose a little taking out the shaft
