With the talk of resto-mods going around thought I’d crosspost this overkill:

Figured that some of you over here hadn’t seen/heard about the new car build that Conover Motor Sports http://www.raceconover.com is doing for me. CMS was also instrumental in the build of Kirk Knestis’ ITB VW Golf… anyone who has seen that car understands the level of prep they deliver.
The car is being built for ITA as the chassis is spec’d at the same weight at the 88-91 Civic/CRX Si.
Before gutting/cage/etc but with a test fit of the suspension and race wheels/tires
Out comes all the interior, glass, engine, tranny, and most of the body panels
Test fit of the race seat and mounts
Custom cage courtesy of Chris Schimmel with Competition Cages http://www.competitioncages.com/
It’ll have a Speedway style rear bar… here Chris is welding in the custom mounts
Dry-break fitting for the 22 Gallon Enduro style fuel cell
Wiring will be inspected re-installed per IT Rules
The engine bay, wheel wells, and underside of the car are all being cleaned up
The chassis will be painted with a white epoxy base paint on a rotisserie (“body in white”). The body panels will then go on and the exterior painted Laguna Blue. The car is currently at with the painter. Feel free to check the build site here for updates: http://www.raceconover.com/buildcivic.htm
Just got some more pics of today’s progress!
Some final cleaning before the primer goes on…
Epoxy primer coat:
Recvd some more photos… these show the beginning of the white base coat going on.
The fender still has some cosmetic rust repair that will be taken car of before final paint work is completed. The rear fenders will also be “rolled” per IT rules. Also, notice the end of the custom rear Speedway swaybar mount.
Below is a good shot of the rear swaybar mount again along with a good view into the rear cage area. The massive hole is where the fuel cell will be mounted.
The top coat of paint should be going on shortly!
Well, slight delay with the painter (death in the family). The base white is done and the suspension is starting to go back on. Should be a roller in the next couple days.
Good news is that everything looks great so far! Bad news is that it won’t be ready for the SIC test day. A simple case of not enough time to have it all done right. At this point it makes much more sense to take a couple weeks more and have the car 100% for it’s first outing. I’d hate to rush and miss something then have problems on track.

A couple more shots:
Pass front A pillar down tube
Driver side rear node
Another shot of the whole enchilada
Damn, that’s clean!
Beautiful looking (IMO)!!
The final product is a result of a local painter doing the tub/cage and Tom Landock of Kernersville, NC doing the exterior paint. A completely top-notch job by CMS and their painters!!
Christian, who’s gonna feel kinda guilty after the first door donut.
Here’s the latest progress…
engine/tranny going in:
What’s that in the trunk?
Ahhhh… fuel cell…
UPDATE:
The car ran under it’s own power today! Cameron got the fuel system, wiring, and brakes done up and got everything up and running without a single hiccup.
Engine bay:
Here are a couple of pics of the interior and brake bias adjusters:
And, finally, the driver’s floorboard:
Sorry guys! I missed Mike’s post last weekend (I was working) and just saw yours Steven.
The car is coming together but I’ve been tied up with some personal commitments lately… here are some shots of it with the bumpers on:
I’ve still got some stuff to do before a logbook… rear fuel cell bulkhead, front and rear glass, tow straps, window and right side net, harness, decals, fire system and then it’ll be ready to go. There are a few other details to have it really track ready… guages, DL1, rear sway bar, alignment, brake bleed.
I haven’t figured out a first track date yet… probably hit a Seat-Time track day at Roebling as a shake down and then catch a race at Daytona later this year.

To farm out and duplicate my build “from scratch”, you’d be looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of $20k.
