Cops Test High-Speed Pursuit Prevention Technology

A suspected felon flees from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Rather than engage him in a dangerous, high-speed chase, the police pursue the suspect for just a few blocks.

Then the cops tag his car with a laser-guided, GPS tracking system, launched from the front grille of the squad car and guided by a laser-sight targeting system.

Once the “sticky” transmitter attaches to the fleeing car, the police track the suspect via real-time feeds over a wireless network.

They drop back, and let the crook slow down. When he stops, the cops speed up, and nab the lawbreaker as he is leaving his car.

interesting… dunno why that idea would have taken so long though… GPS has been around more than long enough.

Also couldn’t they have made the projectile a bit smaller? not exactly inconspicuous having a gigantic black thing on the back of the car

And what happens when the suspect flees in the car out of visual range, then dumps and runs. Even if he has a 30-60 second head start if its not the middle of a field he’ll get away.

I’m much more impressed with the system that discharges an electrical surge causing the car to die. It fires out from the front of the police car pretty much the same way.

The big problem I see with this system is you’re assuming the guy will slow down and become “safe” once the cops back off.

And what Walter mentioned. By the time the cop catches up when the guy stops chances are the driver is long gone. Especially when he sees the monster GPS tracker stuck to his car.

^^ dont worry at the rate this country is declining the automakers and the gov will have those things hidden very nicely within the car !!!

True, but they’d have to stop to take it off  I love technology.

Why is the LAPD shooting dildos at crooks?

I win. my SHO has a protective layer of oil and dirt on the sides and rear so it can’t stick to me

So how long until a cop shoots a person with this thing?

Not to mention this thing probably has a line of sight range (the tracking device), so how will the officer pin the projectile on a fleeing vehicle without pursuing himself? How much more pursuit if traffic is in the way?

It’s a good idea, it will probably cut down on the amount of time in a high speed pursuit (if the cops are fortunate), but this won’t stop high speed chases entirely and it won’t always make high speed pursuits less dangerous.

Can’t OnStar already do this?

i want to see this system vs a bike.

Works even better. You use the projectile to knock the fucker right off the bike. :bump:

better have.

A. good aim
B. a quick enough car to catch up, or a car that can out brake me into a turn
C. hit my bike where I cant pull the probe off and shatter it on the pavement at 100 mph :-p

( i would imagine, it would be quite entertaining to watch them replace the 1000 dollar probes on a regular basis)
