Crossing the border with a temporary registration

Will I have any issues?
Do I need to bring any other paperwork with me to ensure no problems?

Thanks.

I did it when I bought my truck in Detroit. The bitch in the booth at canadian customs gave me a hard time and eventually pulled me over, but the guys that did the quick search were cool about it and were more interested in hearing how much money I saved than actually searching the truck.

US customs didn’t care at all other than the fact that she had to get out to read the paper license plate taped to the inside of the tinted rear window.

I have real plates still, just the paper taped to the windshield. So they’ll likely just check my car? I won’t have anything in it anyways since I’ll be tracking it.

my range came over no problem.

I doubt they’ll even care. Custom’s knows your car has a valid registration before you even roll down your window. That fancy camera does photo recognition on your plate and pulls all your info up automatically.

Does the fancy camera get the rear plate? I don’t have a front plate.

Thanks for the information sir!

Yeah, the camera is aimed at the rear plate because that’s the only one that all states and provinces require.

But if you have a NY reg and no front plate you’re just asking for US customs to bitch at you and give you a hard time.

eghhhh I suppose I’ll zip tie it on for the trip.

I’ve gone over with temp reg and new plates…

The plates still came up to my old car, the reg was for the new one, just had to explain to them that I just bought the car and the guy was cool about it

Bottom line, you want as little wrong as possible. The main concern of Customs and Immigration is contraband and illegal immigrants. It’s not really their problem if you don’t have a front plate, or have an illegal exhaust, or illegal tint (assuming you roll the windows down so they can see in the car) but they CAN make it their problem.

You want as few red flags as possible. You’ve already got one minor one with the paper registration that may or may not show up correctly on their computer depending on how quickly their info gets updated. Do you want to add on missing front plate to that? Anything else illegal? Customs has to move 1000’s and 1000’s of cars each day and they don’t have nearly the manpower to pull each one over. So each little thing that’s “off” about you gets you more attention.

So I’ll definitely toss my front plate somewhere up there. lol.

true.

Me and Josh got pulled over on Sunday because the guy couldn’t figure out why we would be leaving stuff in Canada for a week, then coming back for it the following week. He wanted us to pay tax on the Grill and Propane

After he took a look around the back end and saw that nothing was out of order with the vehicle he just crumpled up the paper and let us roll.
