I need help with the wiring. I’ve relocated my cruise control buttons to the center console.
I have the instructions for the dohc wiring but on the 89-90 sohc the wires coming from the steering wheel button are different. They are red/blue/yellow, and I believe the yellow is still the “cancel” button.
I have a 90 FSM but it doesn’t indicate the colors of the wires from the steering wheel button. Just the colors of the wires that run up the steering column to connect to the button harness which are combination of grn/wht grn/org grn/yel
The write up I have is for 91+ which is as follows:
Cut and strip the cruise control switch wires.
Cut and strip only the Green/Orange and Green/Yellow harness wires (leave the Green/White wire connected - the horn needs it!)
Connect the White switch wire to the Green/Orange harness wire
Connect the Green switch wire to the Green/Yellow harness wire
Tap the Green/White harness wire and connect it to the yellow switch wire. (I have this part done already)
Seems easy right? well I tried my 2 wires on both leads and no dice. Now, are the buttons hot swappable? Like, if I drive the car to test it connected one way and it don’t work - can I just pull over and swap the connections?
Maybe I have a problem elsewhere too, however my cruise light does come on in the dash (and I know about the clutch pedal trick, where sometime it doesn’t rest all the way out when depressed)
I did the relocation because my cruise slowly stopped working. From what I could tell I thought it was the rotator cuff connection in the steering wheel that was causing it - which is known to happen.
I got a set of buttons from a parts car, and I was going to flush mount them but there wasn’t an edge on the button assembly to allow it to sit right. i could do it if I really had the time to spend on it - but I don’t right now.
I’ll get a pic up soon, everyone whose seen it really likes it. I basically have them installed right where the gear shift pattern is located on the center console. I’ll get a pic up tonight when I get home from work.
I did this about a year ago to mine, but I forgot how I did it…I’ll look around for my notes I took when I moved it.
I think I just traced the wires back from the wheel/copper slide plate to the connector on the bottom of the colomn. I then wrote down which colour of wire matched from the cruise buttons to the connector on the colomn.
Splice into each wire on the colomn and run new wires down to your arm rest area and connect them to the corresponding wires on the cruise buttons. It should work perfect.
I can’t find my notes so…have fun matching the colours.
EDIT: A multimeter is almost a must if you want to get it done quickly and correct.
As promised, and my apologies for the crappy pics. I think it was too cold for the camera lol. I was taking these more for the new shift boot and ebrake boot I recently put in, not for the button relocation. I might get better ones this weekend.
hkb make a hub that lets you keep hicas and cruise with an after market steering wheel, I’m still looking for someone who sells them locally, other wise i’m gona be forced to do something similar.
