Cycles & Class M

What exactly are you required to have when you walk into a bike dealership looking to finance or buy a bike?

if you are buying you must have a valid drivers licence and insurance

if you are thinking of getting a bike take the motorcycle safety course first. it is free in the state of PA so take advantage of it

not to highjack but where can you get that course at? I am wanting to get my licence and would love to take the course

i heard ccac boyce campus offers it for free…you practice in the lot on little 250’s or something and afterwards you get your class m or something like that. In case i’m wrong just go here
http://www.pamsp.com

You have to have a permit to buy and ins can be put at time of purchase. Bohn cycle.

there it is… and if you are paying cash… you can have liability… and if you are financing you have to have full coverage (i might be wrong on this but im pretty sure im correct…and its pretty smart anyway to do this)

please take the safety course i hear its well worth it. (i got out of riding before my class came up) and also i believe ins goes down even though its only like 300 a year for full coverage on most bikes. look at liberty mutual for bike ins also really really cheap like 200 a year when i had mine. for a 1000 cc

Mac, you are pretty much correct.

As for the safety class its free if you have your permit but the classes fill up fast. Best way to register is to go to www.pamsp.com and set up an acocunt.

After you successfully complete the class and pass the written and riding test they stamp your permit right then and make it a licence.

Just for those who didn’t know, you are now required to take a permit test to renew the permit. You no longer can just pay the 10 bucks and leave with a permit. This was changed January of 2006.

some companies allow liab. on finacing, a few but not all mine did.

Definately take the course. The advanced course is good, but you cannot take it unless you have your license & have been riding for over 2 years (I think that was the rule - check the website)

When did they start with the permit? I bought my bike with nothing other than good credit & an insurance card stating I had “motorcycle” insurance. That was 5 years ago.

Most insurance companies do not give the discount anymore. I believe it something with PA laws allowing them not to discount.

actually i bought a new one this past year in murrysville and the only thing i needed was good credit…no permit no insurance…they hooked me up with a couple insurance companies rite there and i picked the best…and i rode the bike home…and the next day went and took my permit test…woulldnt suggest riding it home if youve never ridden but it can be done…hope that helped

oh yea i almost forgot…for yamaha at least they only require liability but if your buyin new you should prolly get full

i took the class the past two weeks passed the written part with a perfect and passed the riding part today with a perfect. you learn alot of stuff that you dont think of. my instructor was hard core. hasnt owned a car in 15 years and 55K on his 05 HD full dresser. nice guy and new alot if you go in willing to learn even if you have been riding alot you will learn something. i enjoyed it… jsut 5 hours of riding around in a P/L gets old real fast but atleast i got my liscence finally after 3+ years of riding.

that class is very awesome. i took it before i actually went out on main roads on my sport bike(when i had it). wow, what a difference from before and after that class, just even going around my neighborhood. the class is a bitch to get in tho, you gotta be quick haha

I’m one of those “renew your permit every year for like the last 10 years” guys and finally got in to the class as an alternate so I can just get the stamp and be done with it. Apparently, even though the sign-ups on the web fill up fast, they have a pretty high rate of people who just don’t show up.
I’m in my last few classes this week. You do learn some different techniques and are forced to do some control exercises that you wouldn’t normally take the time to do. Well worth it.
