That’d probably be ok… The rockers don’t look like they’d have much debris after the break, but with running it after it broke, I wouldn’t worry about being too careful
Do you guys know the Fram filter #'s off hand.
I’m not sure it would be in their hanging book at the store.
I can pull my Nissan filter to get the # off that for the synthetic change.
On a related note, we don’t have redline or royal purple or anything here.
We have say Castrol Syntec and Mobil 1 synthetic.
Any recommendations on a synthetic.
I’ve ran both of those, and they’re not crappy oil’s so they should be fine.
S14 SR is the same as a 350z filter. Don’t know the number just know the car relevance. S13 SR is the same as a G20 filter.
Cool, thanks man.
No prob.
Great to read that you figured out the issue. Is that a common problem with SR’s?
does that car have RAS?
After I did some digging on the SR forums, yes, this is a common thing for the SR’s.
Apparently the guys over in Japanland replace them every 100K, and not knowing the mileage on the engine, I’ve ordered all new OEM replacements.
No, the car doesn’t have RAS. I had a conversation with Pete before I bought the car and asked the same thing. He told me that when he was discussing them with the guys at Gord Bush Performance, or the guys at Sasha’s maybe, they made a decision not to use them because stopping the rocker from throwing had the potential to cause much more damage than letting it throw. I forget exactly what the justification was, and I haven’t heard back from him about it since I asked again, so I don’t want to guess right now…
I exploded 2 rockers with Greddy RAS…they don’t do shit if you actually pound on the car.
I have my rockers from FRsport.com in Cali.
I found the rocker arm retainer in 2 pieces in the pan.
Well one piece in the pan, one on top of the plate over the oil pickup.
-
Does anyone know where to get the shims and retainers, preferably in the country, preferably pretty quickly?
-
It seems that the retainer traveled down through the timing chain space, the shim should have did the same thing, but I haven’t found it.
Where would it have went?
A friend of mine who’s built several of his engines told me not to worry about it, and if it’s not stuck in an oil passage somewhere, it will eventually end up in the pan. I’ve ran it a bunch since the failure, so he figured it won’t damage anything.
Should I pull the engine and pull the upper oil pan off and try to find it, or will it be fine if it’s sitting there?
I went over to the machine shop at the university today (I’m doing engineering here), and made a retainer and shim out of 4140 steel. In the morning I’m heading over to the materials lab to heat treat them and anneal them. Nobody in the city had the equipment to do it, and the guys at the university said that what we made would work out until I got some more.
So…Should I tear the engine apart, or cycle some oil through it and see if I find that one shim.
Should I use those parts we machined and heat treated to get the car inspected, and maybe use the car this weekend.
I have 8 oem rockers, and I will have a new set of oem retainers and shims. I’ll dial in the valves when I have the proper equipment, just wondering if you technical guys think I’m good for a temporary fix.
As I mentioned before, if it didnt do damage when you drove it around the chances of it doing damage are slim to none. Its a SHITLOAD of work to pull the upper oil pan. Just ask Bing, I remember he did it with the engine somewhat in the car. That shim has probably lodged itself somewhere and will eventually find its way into the pan. But if you are paranoid then pull the upper pan, I just hope you find it there.
Your shim should be fine. Remember that you have hydraulic lifters so as long as the shim is within factory spec and you install the rocker arm properly all should be good.
I’m sure you guys have seen my “pictures of the new S14” thread by now.
Does anyone know where I can get the rocker retainers and a shim kit in the country, or even a supplier in the states?
