I have some steaks and a bunch of ground meat that I don’t know how to cook. Anyone have any cool recipes for deer meat, I don’t just want to use it for steaks and burgers. I want to make something different.
cook it as you would regular beef… i soak my steakes in wine or milk over night and the kid’s love them , put some gravy in the meat the powder type , mix it up like meat loaf there are a ton of ways to cook it up… the ground meat you can put a sauce… JUST DONT PUT KATSUP ON IT…
do a search on yahoo !!!
or bring it over i will take care of it for you …
the secret is make sure there is no fat on it. the deer fat is what makes it tste funny/bad. if you have chops, wrap bacon around them and bake them.
Soak your steaks in milk for at least a half hour or overnight like customandsound said. (it takes the gamey taste out) Then dip them in beaten eggs and then in cracker crumbs, or flour…or a mixture of both. Then fry them in oil. Chicken fried deer steak = my favorite.
The ground meat makes kick ass chili…especially if you use some hickory smoke in it. I have about a million other recipes, because I lived in Montana and used to hunt. As a matter of fact, I am going to start again next year because killing a deer is cheaper than going to the grocery store for beef
i had chops for dinner from one of the deer i shot … soaked them in italian dressing. i own own cast iron… put some garlic and onions in the and some olive oil cooked as you do regular put a little pepper and feed them to the kids … with corn and stuffing … ( to bad the kids don’t know it is deer i tell them it came from shop n save)
i am a bad uncle
I have a whole cook book on venison at home.
Soak it in some type of oil based dressing like italian over night and grill it with an open flame.
As for gamey taste people are being a bunch of pussies. I have been hunting since I was 12 and have yet to know what the hell “gamey” taste is. And I have eaten everything from deer, elk, bear, wild boar, waterfowl, small game, snake, turtle, and game birds. Its like if it doesn’t taste like USDA then its “gamey”?..WHatever its supposed to be different. Its not from the same animal.
The trick with deer meat as in a cut of meat (not ground) is to make sure you don;t over cook or dry it out. Deer meet is very lean and health but the lack of fat creates a need to help it along.
I have recipies sitting in front of me for…
-stews
-soup
-sweet and sour
-swiss steak
-meatloaf
-meatballs
-roasts
-chops
-chilli
-and the ever popular jerky
Let me know what you may be interested in and I will post up the whole recipie tomarrow when I wake up.
the chops have more of agamey taste then other parts of the deer. also if you don’t take off all the fat it will taste gamey
like sight and sound said … it taste it’s best with out all that junk on it … i doctor it up so the kid’s eat it … and the deer’s meat is better than the store bought all the ones i shot this year 6 in total were all corn feed and got a sweet tasting meat . the only game meat i don’t like is snow goose to dam fatty … but all the rest is great … small game i do them up like wing dings and they make good snacks
Thanks, I will try a few of those ideas out pretty soon.
