DIY Basement Renovation Project: Adding Bedroom and Bath.

I’d almost be afraid to piss in that shower.

Almost.

was the grout you used premixed in a tub ? What brand is it?
only reason is because i’ve used premixed before instead of powder/water mix and the grout NEVER dried. We did a bathroom 2 years ago i think and you could still dig the grout out with your fingernail after running the shower a few minutes. It pretty much destroyed the whole shower and we had to dig out all of the grout , and retile half of the walls. everything started getting mold on it, and we also compounded all of the seams, and had plastic behind the concrete board. its a shame because it was the customer who had picked out the premixed grout instead of powder/water mix so they had to pay for everything to be remodeled again.

im sure you know this but make sure you clear silicone every single seam. (corners of shower, around shower head, turn knobs, door hinges, where floor and walls meet etc) and make sure you wait atleast 24hours before running water again in the shower

I may acid etch the glass to frost a pattern, just not sure of what pattern i would do. I need it to flow. The only issue i have with frosting and the reason why i didn’t just buy a solid frosted panel was i didn’t want the bathroom to feel smaller.

I don’t recall what grout brand i used, i can check later. However it is a dry mix in a 20lb bag specific for wall tile and came pre mixed with the grey color. For the floor i used the same stuff except black and it was specific for floor tile. It dried fairly quick, within 48hrs and i haven’t had any notable problems yet. Though since its a mortar/cement based mix it should be structurally hard in about 28days. I assume pre-mixed grout is not a cement/mortar based grout.

I haven’t siliconed everything yet. I still need to do more concrete polishing and other misc. things… once they are taken care of i’ll go around and do a final once over and silicon all plumbing penetrations and disimialar material joints.

I cant see any pictures at work so if there picture of this question lol please just advise me haah

Did you vapor or themo barrier the walls?

and i for the furnance room did you fully enclose it without any louvered panel?

I ask this because i will doing my basement with the upcoming month and would love to know so i can plan my action lol

I prefer the clear doors, I wouldn’t frost it unless you have a really awesome idea for a design.

I used pre-mixed grout on my kitchen backsplash and it was fine.

The bedroom walls have fibeglass blankets and foam board on all exterior facing walls and only the shower walls have a vapor barrier. The furnace actually has the intake pulling from directly above in the living room and the room is not a 100% sealed/enclosed room. To my knowledge, i’m not affecting the HVAC by enclosing an area around the furnace. So correct, no louvered panel in the utility room.

you’ll be fine with the grout

k, thanks.

some updates…it’s been a while and i forgot about this thread:

Baller.

Great work, Josh. That entire place is incredible.

holy baller as fuck

Figured I’d update the thread. I move to West Palm in a couple days and decided to add a tile floor to the shower and change the jets for a wider spray pattern. The new tenant should love it.

Looks a lot better with the tile floor

Typical Josh…very nice as usual…

Admit it, you took those pictures naked, didn’t you?

New tile is great, did you remove the ceiling rain head, or is it just out of the frame?

So how big is the vent fan that keeps the basement from dripping with humidity after 5 minutes of that thing?

yes. and no. The ceiling head is just out of frame.

I lucked out. I have a very dry basement. the fan is almost over the shower and humidity is not a problem even shortly after getting out of the shower. I recall only once having to wipe the mirror off.

prob super hard to even get soap on you with all those faucets. maybe need a SOAP SETTING like the .25 car wash has followed by a rinse setting…maybe with timers so all you have to do is stand there.

No shit. I would have thought that all that water would turn the basement tropical in a hurry. I guess a well placed fan will suck the humid air out before it can migrate to the rest of the room.

So, you’ve got what 3 days till you move? That’s enough time for the soap mode, and then a rain-x spray and a half dozen giant hair dryers between the shower stall and the bedroom so you can go from dirty to clean and dry in 15 seconds.
