DIY: BMW Drink Coasters

I was PM’d by somebody asking about these coasters i made…so i decided to post the DIY. I made these around 2 years ago…but they’re niffty.

I originally made a set of these for Towne BMW as a gift.

They gave me some “screwed up” license plates since the roundels were the wrong color (grey) and they wanted to see if i could put them to use. My resolve? Why not make some coasters for their waiting/show room?

Process:
1.) Purchased round Steel flanges and powdercoated them mirror black
2.) Cut the Roundel from the License Plate
3.) Epoxy coated the roundel.

The pictures don’t do them justice. They are very 3D and have a nice heavy, quality feel to them.
enjoy:

skunk, if you ask me again how much for a set i will punch you in the asshole.

Price?

$1M

I’m wondering how quickly they were stolen from the waiting room.

Great work as always.

Also you should have your own sub thread for DYI so they are easier to find.

What is the price of a single coaster not a set? I am sure the old man would love it on his desk.

Can you make them for me in different colors? is there extra charge? :mamoru:

Looks good man

very cool man  How did you apply the epoxy? Just brush it on? How do you get it coated so evenly? Saw your table thread, also very cool man  you do outstanding work

i need a license plate

idea - 10/10
DIY - 1/10 def not the best DIY writeup from you we are missing all the epoxy ish and all of the shots :tdwn:

and how much

Any pictures of the side of them against something light? Did you roll the plate edges over the flange? trying to figure out where you put the seam.

you build up an edge, then pour it on.

Did you epoxy the bottom as well?

yeah, sorry…the write-up sucked.

important part:

http://www.wagnercompanies.com/site/Viewer.aspx?iid=1873&mname=article&rpid=570"

I used a plane pipe flange without holes and powdercoated it black. Plugged the central hole and poured epoxy, covering the roundel and filling the flange. Poured just enough epoxy that it would not flow over the edge.

very simple, project took maybe 2hrs, including home powdercoating

right on  that makes sense

How bout some for Towne Hyundai, how much

make some for skunk so I can steal

I love your DIYs, they’re inspiring. Any tips on working with the epoxy?

^Yeah, wear gloves.

Very nice work. You creativity continues to impress me.

nice work looks great

x2

For those curious about the epoxy… It is a 2 component product, mix part a with part b. Stir thoroughly, some require an induction time of a 1/2 hour where you let it sit and the chemical reaction to occur. Then just pour it onto the surface. Most people tape the edge, and once the epoxy starts to set up, they take the tape off. It’s tough because you gotta wait til it’s not liquid anymore, but just before it becomes rock hard. With the tape off you take a flat tool like a putty knife and “roll” the edges so its not a sharp line.
