Yeah . Sniff.
The mustang community doesn’t have these problems. lol
Right now this seems like a lot of he-said-she-said. If Buscher and AMS had these problems, and it’s out in the open, you would think they would have posted some dyno-charts by now. I don’t know anyone personally involved, but if I were to come out with an accusation of this magnitude, I would have posted up documented proof. This would keep a lot of speculation out and bring some respectability to the claims being made.
All this discussion does is make me question the real motive of what’s going on. There is something other undercurrent flowing on this subject and no one knows where it goes except for the people flinging the poo. While the EVO and the 1G/2G DSM are slightly different cars with slight variations to the 4G63 powerplant they share, I find it hard to believe that the differences are that much that Magnus somehow completely botched the construction of the EVO manifold, yet seemed to make a good 1G/2G manifold.
Me personally, for my application I’ve decided long ago that a SMIM was not necessary for what I wanted to do. If I were to change that stance, based on all the accusations being thrown out, I’d me more inclined to attempt to make my own especially since someone in the DSM community has actually done so and provided decent insight on how to go about constructing one.
If you were a member of NABR you would be able to see the “behind the scenes” of what is going on… It’s basically Dave just being himself. He feels he is gods gift to everything. Whatever.
I have had good and bad experiences with Magnus manifolds. Overall they are the best out there. Everyone has copied his work and designs.
Marco knows his shit. End of story. Having talked with both in person I would say he knows it better than Dave…
i can see though how these could underperform on the stock manifold design on stock powered cards… when you get into the big power cars (those running 9’s) they probably perform ok… but thats not to say the stock mani wouldnt perform equally if ported…
The DSMLink forums did a manifold test which included the Magnus SMIM, Venom, 1G stocker, 2G stocker, Extreme Motorsports (iirc). Anyway, the testbed was an upgraded 2G vehicle, nothing crazy but certainly far from stock. Believe it or not, the stock 1G manifold was best averaging all RPM points. Obviously the Mangus was best for top end HP.
The limited experience I had with mine, I wish the welding was a bit more precise; although there were no pinholes, some of the welds were too thin. I also found out later from Don that either the DSM manifold (IIRC) blew up at the track (perhaps on Marco’s talon) which led to them welding supports on it.
From what Don and Tevenor have said about Marco he seems to be a really great guy and I know Buschur is a douche. He’s the kind of guy who wants everyone to suck his dick and rides the whole “I was the original DSM innovator” or some such nonsense.
Oh, and as Mike said, the STi Mangus manifold that Mike @ Innovative sold Greg Ballsack looked like a fucking quilt.
Sure that has nothing to do with the fact that Dave is an asshat and is basically using his forum as a soap box to slam someone for personal reasons.
I have Magnus’ early 1G SMIM on my car and I had to have Don reweld the whole thing due to leaks. I wasn’t too happy about the quality control.
For all the work that I have done to my car I believe it was worth it to get it, but I don’t have any before and after dyno sheets to prove it.
Correction, Lee and Matt rewelded it… I can weld, for me, not for shit for anyone else.
Maybe thats something I should have done before I put the car back on the road. Is Matt still around here somewhere???
you want one?
from the first link
I’ve also tested Extrude Honing on the stock, which for some reason on the EVO does not make power.
is that really true? on the SHO (completely different) EXintake gives up a 10-12 wtq across the entire rpm band
??? Wrong Matt!!
I meant LowlyOilyBurneryGuy. Not Lubricant!!!
These are the only manifolds I’d run on my cars… stock, dvdtfab, my own snky and the magnus snky. I generally keep my opinions to myself unless just shooting the shit so I’m not quoted on the internet. So I’ll just watch and see and that’s about it because I don’t care either way and because I know what will work better in my case.
Define “underperform”. That’s too broad of a statement. What rpm range? What air flow rates? What other mods are on the car?
You give me 2 identical platforms except one has a SMIM ( regardless of who makes it ) and stock DSM cams and then you set the other one up with 280’s and a 1G manfold and guess which one will make more power?
The manifold, like any other component in a system, is effected by the other parts in the system.
The way Dave came at this is similar to having a 5k suspension system in your car and then swapping to a different set of swaybars and the taking it for a track day without doing anything additional. He comes off yelling that “these swaybars are shit because I gained 1 second off my lap time”. Couldn’t perhaps be that single component didn’t fit 100% into the system? Perhaps a slight modification of the system would take better advantage of the change?
check this for some good pics / info:
looks like almost every one of those guys is using parts from ross machine
There are only 2 up there with ross machine stuff, one is fftec which is almost all ross stuff and the other is the driven one which uses there own cnc bent end tank with extruded runners and fuel rail from ross. The other guys just machine there own plenum floors and go from there.
I do like the driven innovations fuel rail set up though.
fyi… Magnus SMIM’s are manufactured in St. Catharines. the guy who owns the company that builds them is a regular customer at my family’s restaurant.
Not sure when he took over production, it sounded to me (mid summer 07) that he has just taken over or was just taking over.
