weak
IF the torrent is offering the beta which is free then it’s not illegal.
i cant get on the fucking site at all lol.
Eh I got vista…I’m not to desperate to try this out.
I’m hoping to grab a couple of licenses…one 32 bit and one 64 bit…
From Wired:
Microsoft will make the first public beta of Windows 7, the next version of its desktop operating system, available as a free download on Friday. There are several limitations, however, so even if you’re excited and committed to trying out Windows 7 Beta 1 on your home PC, check out this list of rules, requirements and considerations.
We culled this list from a post on the official Windows blog and its comments, so check it out before taking the plunge:
Windows 7 Beta 1 will be made available for a limited time at 12:00pm Pacific on January 9, 2009.
Visit the Windows 7 page on Microsoft’s website for the link.
It will only be made available to the first 2.5 million people to download the code. Demand will be huge, so prepare to act quickly.
Microsoft has not announced a specific time on Friday for the release, but we can expect it will be later in the day so the west coast of North America isn’t left out. Update: The beta will be available at 12pm (noon) Pacific. Other links have surfaced, but they aren’t working and they aren’t official anyway. Read the details in our newer post.
Windows 7 Beta 1 will be offered as an ISO image. It’s around 2.5 or 3 gigabytes, so you will need a DVD burner if you want to install it.
You will be required to register before downloading so Microsoft can give you a product key.
It will be build 7000.
The beta will only support Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 upgrades. If you’re not running Vista SP1 right now, upgrade before you try to install the Windows 7 beta.
There is also a clean install option for the Win7 beta.
There is no upgrade path from XP.
There’s only one version of the beta, which Microsoft says “is roughly equivalent the Ultimate edition of Windows Vista.”
The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1. You will probably be forced to go back to using Vista SP1 on August 1 (or maybe upgrade to Win7 Beta 2?).
English, German, Japanese, Arabic, and Hindi versions will be available Friday.
Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions will be available (except for Hindi, which only gets a 32-bit version).
If you’re upgrading, remember to back up your PC. It’s a beta, stupid!
If you miss out, there will be other ways to get the beta in the near future. It’s likely Microsoft will be handing out hard DVDs of the code at developer events and consumer conferences throughout the year. And of course, (cough) there’s always BitTorrent.

If you can’t get links working, you’re retarded. DLin @ 1.5MB
thank you sir
what did you do about a key? I didn’t enter one when I installed it last night, but it asked for one
So what’s the verdict? Do you guys like it? I just finished installing and playing around to figure it out. Not sure if I like it or not yet.
thanks, key info?
ive got the VM Appliance coming up now. Slow as shit on this pc though. A VM on a box with only 512mb of ram is ROUGH.
I need it to resume so that I can shut it down and throttle the ram down to 256 lol
I’ve been running it on a virtual machine for the past month, and it runs as fast as the native XP pro that’s running on my computer with only 2 gigs of memory designated to it. It seems like it’ll be everything that vista should’ve been.
I have only dedicated 272mb of ram. I am posting this on my Windows 7 VM, over RDP.
It is actually running normally!! This thing would be rock solid with 2GB.
I am thoroughly impressed, I must say.
edit: Am I alone in thinking that M$ completely stole the look and almost some of the feel away from KDE 4?
I haven’t run linux in a long time so i can’t comment on the KDE4, but the fact that it’ll run on a VM with that little ram dedicated to it is pretty sick.
yeah I did not really think this was going to be a successful venture. I am impressed, seriously.
I was expecting big things…I wish that would change up the UI some day…it looks like Vista…
im sure they tweaked a lot of background process shit to make it more stable…but seriously give it a face lift try some new shit.
I’m interested in how this runs on a variety of systems. I’ve never bothered trying Vista because I’ve got an aging rig and everyone says it’s a memory hog. So…
Post your system specs and impression of how it runs vs Vista/XP.
I’ll be installing it later this afternoon so:
Athlon XP 2400+ (single core, 2GHZ, 256k L2, 32bit)
768 DDR266
PATA100 8mb cache HDD
Radeon 9600XT
This space reserved for comment later…
Update: Hello from Windows 7! So I removed the drive letter from the WM7 partition in XP, and for some reason (and I haven’t looked yet) WM7 doesn’t seem to be seeing XP. Which is good, although I don’t know why WM7 doesn’t see the XP partition.
It seems to be running pretty well. I am installing AVG antivirus and it seems to be working, although it’s bounced back and forth between running and not responding… My onboard ethernet driver had to be manually installed, same for my onboard audio. My XP drivers worked fine for both. My webcam driver, which was a PITA to install in XP installed automatically. (In XP I had to install the driver, then uninstall all of my USB ports and refresh my computer to get it to start.) Oh yeah, Canon Printer had to be updated too. Otherwise all my hardware installed automatically.
LOL already downloaded 3 windows updates.
It seems to be running OK. Maybe a touch slow, but it looks like there’s a lot of pretty shit turned on. Transparent windows and whatnot.
OK friends are here. Time to drink. Later!
I bet it will run great on that platform
see my comment above about KDE 4. New Taskbar is a complete ripoff IMO
Intel Q6600 3.0Ghz
4gb DDR2
GTX260
running it under vista 64 in VMware. 2 processors (x3ghz) and 2gb memory and 3D hardware acceleration.
Windows only uses around 450mb of ram (compared to around 1.5gb for vista) very very nice OS so far… if I had an extra hard drive laying around, I’d probably install it on it’s own
I agree, i wish they did more with the UI, I never really liked the vista interface.
I’m running:
2.33 Core 2 Duo
4 gigs of DDR 800
256 mb ATI card, forget which kind
Runs on a VM like a fresh install of XP Pro…
I was weary about enabling the network on it at first when i downloaded the internal release last month but i guess it looks like a lot of people are running it at this point so it probably doesn’t matter. I guess i’ll go ahead and download this legit build.
