dsm/srt4/neon guys.....i gots a question

we are currently building a 2.4"srt" setup for a friend, and trying to figure out the size for the head stud threads so i can tap them…10mm is too small and 12mm is too big, but thats what the set came with, i think its an 11mm but i cant find anyone who sells them… so my question is what size are they and where could i pick one up from

thanks

What block / head?

need more details

2.4l n/a block, dohc head to match

which head are you using? The 2.4 or the 2.0? For us 2g ppl we have to use are 2.0 head on the 2.4 block. As for the head studs, i’m pretty sure that the stock(or aftermarket) 2.0 ones can be used (but not 100% on that tho). I read it somewhere but dont remember where. I’ll try to find it. Hope that helps.

ok…um its the 2.4"420a"(i dont actually know the chrysler engine code for the 2.4) dohc out of a stratus…2.0dohc head from a neon…same head as the 2.4 i need to know what size the threads for the head studs is so i can properly tap them…

WTF are you talking about tapping studs.

Use the ARP kit for the VW 1.8t
If you have the head from the JA block use the intake cam from the 2.4 and exh cam from the 2.0

Early or late exhaust port 2.4?

The Denton brothers would know better than DSM peeps… Nice info, brother of the Z…

i don’t see how everyone has managed to miss the question and give meaningless information

the questions are:

A) what size are the threads for the head studs
B) where in the area can said tap size be obtained ?

its already been determined that the size is 11mm … the only problem left is that no one in the area claims to have an 11mm, Transit Town Chrysler Jeep even claims that they don’t do engine work, and there for no one in the shop has a tap that would fit

apparently Chrysler’s and Jeeps never blow their engine … ever …

truth

im not talking about tapping studs…sorry bout the miscommunication…i need to tap the holes for the headstuds on the deck to clean the threads…i need to know where to pick up the proper tap to do so, and i am making sure that it is a 11mm tap and not some other wierd or random size, also it doesnt say hte size in the srt4 fsm…

i know that the motor uses the same head studs as the 1.8t vdub motor, we already picked up the arp set…

the head he got is from a 97-98 dohc neon, so the swapping of the cams we really cant do…

My suggestion to you is to call ARP and get the specs on those headstuds and nuts that come with it. I doubt they will be dicks about it…

wat about an easier phone call…like call a vdub dealership since they use the same headstuds…

Ummm yeah, they probably won’t know shit at the dealer. Just call ARP and give them the stud kit part number. ARP has always been helpful to me when I’ve called needing information.

Or better yet, go on DITB and ask the VW guru’s… One of them is bound to know.

alright…thanks, ill give arp a call tomorrow

ok so i called arp today and got the exact size of the tap i need…11x1.5mm… now i just need to find out where to pick up the tap

I’m kind of afraid to ask this question.

Why are the threads in the block fucked up? or rather Why do you THINK the threads in the block are fucked up. You know that head bolts are a stretch fit and they shouldn’t nececarily come out easy. If the threads in the block really are bad, you don’t need to chase them with a tap, you need to install a helicoil. If you’re going to the trouble of installing studs instead of bolts, I’d sure as shit like to know they’re anchored propperly.

If it were me, I wouldn’t fuck around with a tap. I would take a good head bolt. oil it up and run in in and out, oiling the shit out of it each time to wash out any possible debris. (remembering to clean the debris out of the oil pan before it eats the turbo) If you still have drag on the head bolt, then helicoil it.

PS out of curiosity, is it a coarse or fine thread? [/rhetorical]

I don’t think he wants to repair any threads just chase them to get all the potential shit out. If it was bead blasted and then dishwashed, it probably has some residue of some sort that needs to be cleaned out.

okay, but chasing dirty threads with a tap is kind of like using a machete to remove a splinter, you can do it, but you can do more damage than good. If he’s just cleaning debris, wd40 and a head bolt is effective without being dangerous

I guess the point is that Mini needed an answer and I wonder why he’s asking the question.
