My brothers 21st birthday at college was a total blast. He was having a great drunken night DT. When he came back to campus he realized that his truck was parked in a “non 24 parking zone.”
To get to a 24 hour spot required driving about a football field, stopping at a stop sign, and parking the adjacent lot, all of which was on campus, and dead as can be at 2:30 AM.
As much as my brother did not want to move the truck, his friends did not know how to drive manual :mamoru:, so my brother was forced to move it on his own. Normally, not a big deal… even shitfaced… but this was not his lucky night.
He slightly rolled the stop sign and was spotted by on campus bacon as he parked it for the night. They proceeded to run the gauntlet of tests, determine he was thoroughly intoxicated, throw him in the back of the cop car, and hold him in jail for the night, ON HIS 21st.
He is still dealing with the repercussions from this situation.
There are many instances such as this one, where it is rather ridiculous, but the bottom line is he should not have been behind the wheel… even if it was 100 yards.
I love all the boozers defending the lax penalties against drunk driving. Drunk drivers ruin tons of lives and is no reason to justify doing it. If you guys got hit by a meth head you would be pissed but I am sure the meth addict could use the same excuses the drunks use to justify it to themselves.
But for all the cop knows, he wasn’t actually going to park there. Maybe he saw the cop and pulled in there so he could use that as an excuse… They don’t know he wasn’t about to drive somewhere else.
If you drive home drunk 1000 times and never get caught or hit anything, and save $30 to 50k in cab fees and infinite inconvenience, how does that not make sense? That’s a little too generalized. One of my good friends from school drove home at varying degrees of drunk 3 nights a week for 4 years, and only gave up his keys when he passed a certain threshold that he himself knew about. Nothing bad ever happened. By your logic, he should be dead 100 times, in jail for a hundred years, and have a couple million dollars in fines. For nothing.
I don’t care. Maybe he’s really lucky, but you have to make the rule to the majority, not the exception.
I bet Dale Earnhardt can drive 140MPH very safely down the 290 (as long as he is going east, LOL). Does that mean that now every speeder should be issued a speeder’s aptitude test (SAT) when pulled over for speeding? I feel like it’s enough of a break for people drinking and driving to be given a field sobriety test AND a breathalyzer and that it’s at the officer’s discretion to issue a citation…
Yeah, basically, you are rolling the dice if you drive drunk frequently. I knew a dude that said he used to drive so drunk that he would have to do the “close one eye” trick in order to see straight and not see doubles. He never got caught either.
If he gets lucky, good for him. I am glad nobody has died in his hands.
