Been here a while and never really had the chance to post a build thread. I picked the GSX up after my first deployment when I was stationed in Jacksonville, FL. 2 months later drove it up to Jacksonville, NC. After a year of tinkering with it, at the time was running a Supra SMIC with a 14b, the bolt holding the stubby shaft on the oil pump broke sending the shaft into the bottom where it tore everything up. Lucky for me this was two days before I was leaving for my second tour to Iraq. After I got back from the deployment I really had no down time as I was getting ready to move again. 1100 miles later the GSX is moved into my garage and the fun begins.
Motor was rebuilt with Evo GSR crank and rods, .20 over 8:1 Topline pistons, ACL race bearings, ARP bolts, MLS Head Gasket, Evo IX Sodium valves and Semi-Beehive springs, and Mistu “C” and “D” cams for the higher lift. Nothing special.
Turbo setup is Evo III Manifold, 16g Turbo, and Evo III O2 housing
(Turbo is bolted for mock up, I know there are two bolts missing!)
Evo IX Intercooler with end tanks painted with Radiator paint and mesh “mod”
Exhaust is full 3" with Magnaflow Highflow cat and Magnaflow muffler.
Fuel is rewired Evo VIII fuel pump with 560cc injectors.
Tranny is an automatic with Translab shift kit, IPT end clutch, welded center diff, Tru-cool tranny cooler, Trick Shift fluid, and “Stan’s” timing mod (removes the timing between shifts).
Hoping this front bumper comes out good.
Not much is left on this build before I’m ready to turn the key, wish me luck.
All that really left to finish the intercoolerpiping, a rear O2 sensor, new intake filter, some gaskets, and fluid. Here’s some pictures of the tranny cooler and my cold air box
I fucking hate this car! :eek
It’s a '99 7bolt block, has the redesigned thrust bearings. That and it’s an automatic so alot less likely to crank walk.
6bolt is better, but the 99 GSX 7bolt was the best of the non evo 7bolt engines… auto gsx + a good stall/built auto + power would be pretty solid i think. time to make a stout auto tranny, and get some power behind it
It’s got the basic auto tranny upgrades. When this one goes I’ll just pick up a full built IPT tranny. Only reason for keeping the stock TC was for DD.
So haven’t posted this shit in 6 months or so. Finished the IC, picked up a red top, boost leak tested it ( only took a week or so to find all the fucking holes!), starter shit the bed so that was replaced, primed the motor to get oil flowing to the turbo, And finally tonight it STARTS! Ran for about 2 min between 2k and 5k and smoked everything out! I forgot I put oil in the cylinders to keep it from rusting! So tomorrow I’m going to pull all the plugs and clean the rest of the oil out. Started this build in NC many moons ago, so now I’m almost finished.
