Electric Car Owner Arrested For Stealing 5 Cents' Worth Of Power

Do you understand that the punishment for stealing is what it is…

It doesn’t suddenly change because it was electricity, gas, pack of gum, etc

I don’t think many of you understand how being arrested works. He hasn’t been sentenced to any jail time. He hasn’t even been convicted. He was arrested and spent 15 hours in jail because all the processing that goes with an arrest takes time. It takes more time in places like Chamblee, Ga, population 9,892 because they probably don’t even have regular court hours.

He’ll get his day in court and I seriously doubt he’ll get anything more than a fine. He’ll also serve as a warning to others that just because you can see an outlet doesn’t mean you’ve found free power.

'murica

I don’t have a problem with him getting in trouble for stealing, but the scale of the response to his steeling makes me :worf: They arrested and put the guy in jail.

steeling^

Yeah, they tossed him in Jail a week later, for 15 hours… weird.

Even after you post it, people still don’t understand.

I’m going to assume this based on watching SVU:
The school said, “hey don’t do that”, but the Leaf guy didn’t cooperate or put up a hissy fit. Or, someone at the school is on a power (no pun intended) trip .
School contacts authorities.
[EDIT] Apparently it was a cop that caught him in the act. [/EDIT] http://www.wkyc.com/story/homepage/2013/12/04/man-arrested-after-plugging-in-electric-car-at-school/3868109/
Authorities talk to DA.
DA mulls over it for a week, building a case, witnesses and other ish, determining if this is worth the effort. Maybe the DA wants to make a name for himself with this historic case.
Arrest is made.
Either the Leaf guy is being un-cooperative, OR, the arrest is made in the evening.
The judge sees Leaf guy the next morning during court hours, and has him or someone else post bail (or maybe no bail).
Maybe the judge request $$$ and someone else had to post bail and that took time.

The 15 hours in jail is not the punishment, but the process. Can’t you even be held for 24 hours without being charged (no pun intended) at all?

Correct. And technically it’s not jail, it’s just the holding cell used to keep you until you get seated in front of a judge. And unless they are corrupt cops, is not a punishment for a crime, since they are innocent until proven guilty.

Oh, I’m sorry, I did not know you were the Forum Police…

Meanwhile, back in reality, if you really believe that the punishment fits the crime, you seriously need your head examined…

Relax Joe, I never said that.

I wasn’t talking to you, was talking to Sherm.

:picard: 'ing myself here… I read meanwhile as maxwell real quick, lol.

Carry on…

A quick google says the leaf is 8 hours to charge and only 75 miles on a full charge. He is a fucking douche for hooking up to a public building for 20 minutes, wtf did that get him? All that effort for an extra 10 miles?

I think we’re all overlooking the possibility that this is Nissan prejudice, pure and simple. I now have a problem with this municipality.

stealing a nickel worth of anything is literally stealing but it isn’t even worth getting into an argument over.

even the cop should have just called him a fag, unplugged the car and gone about his day.

this is why we (you guys) can’t have nice things. the school systems waste so much money without a fuss and some guy plugs into an outlet for 10 minutes and no one has the common sense to stop this whole process before it costs the city thousands in processing costs.

maybe give the guy a $15 loitering ticket or something like that… detainment of any kind for this is insane. the police officer should be disciplined unless the vehicle owner went on a shit-fit and provoked a more serious reaction.

What are you talking about?

I asked a simple fucking question because I was trying to understand your point of view

This is the same thing that would have happened regardless of what was stolen so your actual issue is with the legal system and punishment for stealing

Whoever the loser was that reported it just should have told him to unplug the car instead of “omg this dude plugged in his ghey electric car. here i wrote down his plate number”

I know its apples to oranges… But I am 100% sure none of you “stealing is stealing and thats final” people have any illegally downloaded movies or songs, at all… right?

And this isn’t stated either… Is there a sign that says that its not for general use? Why does this school have an electric car charging station if nobody is allowed to use it? does this school have electric school buses? What other purpose could this serve? Is it for faculty only? His kid goes to the school so obviously he pays school taxes so in theory he kind of did pay for this to be installed, and its .05c I can’t believe anyone actually has a problem with this… Like joe said, the punishment doesn’t fit the crime…

It was just a 110 outlet outside of the school

First off, Leaf guy is Rhubarb lady:

Leaf guy only took 20 minutes worth because a cop stopped him from taking more (this is the same as catching someone with a siphon hose in their mouth stealing gas, “oh but I only got a couple ounces”). You are naive to think he doesn’t do this every time his son plays tennis or that he hasn’t done this at other locations. This isn’t his first time, this is the first time he got caught.

We don’t know the whole story, did someone from the school tell him to stop and he didn’t? Or did someone from the school narc him out without warning? Or was the cop at the right place at the right time?

What was his punishment? I don’t think this has gone to court yet?

Thanks for clearing that part up

exactly.
