engine light

well i didn’t know i had a tear in the timing belt until this morning, good thing the guy caught that!
The guy replaced the spark plug and wires, but he said that didn’t fix the problem. I had my cat replaced 3 times because the mechanic didn’t put the correct cat in, so this last time he went with a different vendor and it seemed to work.
As for the exhaust valve, every morning my car smokes out of the exhaust. I was told i needed a new head gasket or a new exhaust valve, but as long as I kept putting oil in it, it would be fine… i am rethinking that part.

I have about 160,000 miles on the car. I haven’t driven my car since Friday morning b/c i was told not to when the light is blinking, so at least that was the correct thing to do.

I just copied and pasted what the site said…

the almighty VAGtool?

yeah her OBD code was anything from lost compression to a bad cat, to out of gas. it’s like sayin… ‘yup, somethings just not right’. hell we knew that much

OK, so we know it’s not the plugs or wires, what about distibutor cap or rotor? Your car smoking in the morning you may need new valve seals or piston rings but if you had a burnt exhaust valve you would have no compression in that cyl. So I don’t think that is the problem. A blown head gasket would not make you car lose oil it it would make you lose coolant and actually make your oil level more full, from mixing with the oil in the motor. Did you have a problem with your car overheating before this blinking light problem. Your car could have even jumped time if your timing belt is ripped causing a severe misfire code. Your best betat this point would be to take it to Acura. I would be really surprised if they couldn’t figure out the exact reason of the severe misfire. Sorry I can’t be more helpful but without having the car in front of me it could be a few things causing your problem.

^ You are plenty helpful! I had a new distributor cap and rotor put in in March. There is no overheating, but i am always putting oil in it…

Well Acura had it at 10:30 this morning and I just called and they haven’t even looked at it yet. So I am thinking if I call every hour maybe they will get to it faster? The squecky wheel… well, you know the rest. Regardless, I HAVE to go back to CT tomorrow.
Looks like I may have to take my dad’s car and leave my parents with 1 car until mine is done. The thing that worries me is that neither of my parents like driving my car. My dad is too old and it’s hard for him to get in and out of it. So you can see my frustration with this whole thing :frowning:

Thanks guys for letting me vent and giving me your thoughts! It really does help!!

man that sux, good luck :x:

Wow a lot of rather misguided advice in this thread. Lots of people making suggestions that apparently have never been anywhere near a honda let alone an OBD2 honda car. I’m glad you got the car away from the guy that said your egr valve was ok, last I checked there is no egr valve on a 98 teg. Sounds like your timing may have jumped from the torn timing belt. Also, sounds like you have bad valve seals which can cause smoking on start-up, loss of oil, misfires, and can pretty much make the car damn near impossible to start if bad enough. Your problem should be rather easily diagnosed by some simple checks and tests and possibly swapping of a couple parts with known working ones (plug wires, distributer, ecu).

Be very careful what acura says needs fixed as if by chance it is an ecu problem as they will charge you like $1000+ for a new one when a used one can be had for maybe $100 for that car. Just $.02 from a guy that has wrenched on many many hondas

^ Thanks I appreciate it!

update…

Acura finally called me tonight and said it doesn’t look good, worse case I may need a new engine… hmmm twice now I have heard this. The technician is going to call me tomorrow morning at 7:30 so more on this later…

better get a head start and bend over…

  • Faulty spark plug or wire
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Running out of fuel
  • Poor compression
  • Defective computer

WTF. I thought that mechanic said that you had a bad VALVE COVER GASKET. Why dont they list that …

u should bring it to me,
i getcha a new motor in there for $650, overnight
and it will run perfect forever…

not tring to take money or from you or anyone else from this site, just trien to get ur car fixed,is it an automatic?

yup, it is an automatic…

For the amount of money it would take to tow it to Finleyville, not sure that is worth it, although it would be nice to tow it to someone I trust

He’s got access to a flatbed trailor and a truck so towing would be cheap :naughty:

Seriously though, post up what you hear from the dealer, more likely than not they are going to try to hit you with a massive repair bill for something that should only be a few hundred if that.

Well if acura tells me they want to put a new engine in, I can pretty much guarentee that someone on this board who owns a shop and can get a new engine at a reasonable price will get my biz. My only issue is towing… so we will see…

there are guys on here that tow!!! just see what the final word is from the dealer and let us know.

you guys rock

Acura just called me
They said cylinder #3 is dead, no compression worn out rings. They said there is an external blown head gasket and with the amount of oil leaks my best bet is a new engine. He said they can get me a used engine for $2,000…

sooo. who wants to pick a tow from acura in wexford? Seriously? I need this done asap b/c I have to get on the road to CT today… :frowning:

edit,… i don’t need the car fixed asap i just need it to be towed
