Engineering @ UB

Initially i was thinking about doing the electrical engineering program, now i’m more interested in computer engineering. I have the engineering science associates degree from ECC and just got accepted to UB but not into any major. Has anyone gone through the computer engineering program there? What’s the job market like for either of the engineering degrees? Internship opportunities for either program available? Which one should offer me the most in terms of job security? (i’m leaning more towards computer engineering, but i’m just looking for ideas to help finalize my decision)

You’ll have to take a bunch of Computer Science classes for the CE degree, and I’ve been through the Comp Sci degree. It’s difficult but very rewarding. Job market depends on your location, but GOOD engineers are always in demand. You’re on your own with finding internships. UB will not spoon feed anything to you. Your have to work at finding opportunities. You’re experiences in the job market are only what you make of it. Your degree is only a stepping stone, but it depends on what you see yourself doing in the real world. Do you know that yet? If not, you are probably better off just doing the standard Engineering pre-requisites for the next year until you DO know.

We can’t find any damn power systems engineers. The job market will be really good if you do electrical engineering and focus on big wires instead of little wires or circuit boards.

Step 1:

Ignore anything that UBengineering says

X2. I did the ME program at UB and have attended 2 other colleges in the process. UB is a pretty good engineering school from what I can tell. But make damn sure you get internships and work experience. Your degree doesn’t mean a whole lot without it these days.

LOL

+1

Which ever you choose, stick it out. I know two kids that switched from ECC that struggled for a semester trying to adapt to how grading and testing is, plus the HW loads and expectations. Huge leap I guess since your coming in mid-major and they expected it to be the same. Like said before, UB wont “give” you an internship and but their resources are very good. Every place that I’ve spoken to using their online job finder claimed to take UB students often with very good results and job offers, even if you still have semesters left. Engineers places like to see UB so its definitely a nice plus. I’ve noticed that a lot of the postings are programming, but don’t really know how good they are or much about it or EE, but I’m good friends with a kid who is an EE major and seems to enjoy it.

I’m finishing up my BSME this year. Like they said, UB doesn’t lay out internships for you, but they’re definitely out there. I worked for two separate companies as an intern without any help/guidance from the school.

Definitely look into the Career Services office at UB if you’re interested in landing an internship or even a job. Companies will often email the career services office with openings, and the office just forwards the email to all students on its mailing list. Definitely a nice little resource to have, as you’re aware of opportunities that you otherwise never would have heard about

aww thats not nice =(
