“rat rods” were started back in the 50’s buy people who couldnt afford to put high dollar parts into their cars to make them stand out. they scrounged for pieces, and used every ounce of creativity they had to make do with what they found or have… to make their car look like nothing else on the road.
work is work, dont get me wrong I respect that… but there really isnt much of anything out of this world on that car. and the wheels kill it. A true “rat rod” would not have 2K+ in wheels, heck the entire car would have 2K into it! No there wasnt BMW’s rolling around like this back in the 50’s thats not my point.
To me its a poser. and there really isnt much at all to what they did. its on a nut swinger website, and it looks like nothing that crowd has ever seen so its blowing peoples minds. I could have built that car for nickles and do it in a month, and gotten the same response. Sorry but putting bomber seats in, rusting a body and hacking shit together isnt something I look up to and say wow.

And sure their are. There is nothing stopping someone from picking up a 50’s german car (infact I was looking at building a 60 something Volvo and making a rod out of it for something different).

only thing custom on that car is: roof rack, strut mod and strut tower, dash & over fender. the only thing I respect in that is the wood roof rack! lol then the dash to an extent. rest of the shit was bunk.
a true “rat rod” (i hate that word now that I say it more and more) would never have an RCI fuel cell in the trunk. they would have found a old keg or a 50lb bomb and made a tank from it.

I think it should be taken for what it is, the last run of a cool car that has served the owner well, done some new things or a new combination of things and is a neck-breaker. I think there were 90-100 accidents at H2O solely due to people looking at this car.
i see your point however i dont see that car as a “rat rod”. those pictures you have there are rat rods. this is just a different style and yes rusting a car does not make any sense but it does make it stand out and be unique. its something new. he does own a couple other very clean not rusted bmws also.
whats funny is the only reason the rat rod discussion came about is because someone didn’t want it to be called one.
it did win speedhunters 2010 best rat, which is voted on by the readers of speedhunters. the owner was/is also up for personality of the year, because he is a cool ass guy that does a lot of good shit for the car community.

It’s the same style and is nothing new. It’s a fad that people are copping to late model cars, trying to look retro or ratty. VW’s are doing it more and more too. With your theory about its made to stand out and be unique, I feel like its no different than a wacked out body kitted honda. Both will turn heads and make it stand out. How come people hate riced out shit like that but love this bmw?
If the owner took the time and sourced out authentic dilapidated parts, scrounged around and found some more unique parts that don’t belong on the car and integrated them in, and lost the damn wheels… i could see it fitting the bill. until then, it’s an imposture.

all those cars SHOULD NOT BE ON THE LIST. They have NOTHING to do with being a rat. IMO that pile of cars discredits the people that picked the list, and tarnishs the name rat rod. I think of it in the same capacity as I do the new camaros. They are clearly not as cool as the original, but they are the best thing we are gonna get nowadays. Seems like these guys were influenced by the original ratrods and are just taking some of that style and mixing it with the stanceworks styling and some other stuff. It’s not as bad as PR modded civics, but it’s still lame.
i just like to stir up shit, i don’t consider rusty a rat or a rat rod at all. i just consider it a car that the owner does what he wants with which is why i like it. i did vote for it for best rat though, because i wanted to see it win whatever it was nominated for.
