No, it uses cans of alcohol gel. Throws off enough heat to warm up that room in the winter and looks/sounds like wood burning. I’m going to use the same fuel for an in wall fireplace in my upstairs bathroom once remodeled.

My vote is for option 1, it makes more sense to me based on what I have seen in the pictures.
