Fastest Lap Of Manhattan

Alex Roy dethroned. The video isn’t that interesting because it’s not filmed a-la-getaway in _____, but it’s still cool. MPD47 had nothing to do with this…

When illicit speed racer Alex Roy circled the Island of Manhattan in 2001 he set the known record for fastest time at 27 minutes while reaching speeds of 144 mph over the 24.48 mile distance. For legal reasons, he never released the tape. A new driver’s now done it in 26:03. Here’s the video.

How:
Three weeks were spent on surveillance and test runs. There were six attempts at breaking the record but each time, there was some sort of delay, whether it was construction or just too many cars on the road. Eventually we learned that Monday nights seemed to be the safest, as there were the least amount of cars on the road.

When:
A Monday night early in the summer of 2010.

Why:
There really wasn’t any reason not to. We are smart, strategic, and responsible individuals who are entirely capable of doing something like this in as safe a manner as possible.

Driving Experience:
Driving is much more than a mode of transportation. It is an act that brings human and machine together. We’d like to include a quote from Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, during an interview about his participation in the US Express, “A lot of times we put this boundary around us - this is me, and these are my tools… but when you’re driving, or racing especially, that boundary blurs and you become one. You start thinking of the car as your body”.

Another awesome find from you  I wish they would show it in real time just to get a better idea of the driver’s ability. I mean obviously there’s a lot of skill but it’d be nice to hear the car just to get an idea of everything that went into that run.

X2

So he went 144mph but didn’t want to run red lights?lol

he wasn’t passing people that fast… idk.

What car?

Well we know Alex Roy reached speeds of 144mph but no real speed recordings of this lap were shown. I’m sure we can assume that he attained some speeds close to that, if not exceeding that, given the fact that he finished nearly a minute quicker. But who knows? With the timing of the lights that can cut quite a chunk of time out of it. It could merely be the amount of research into the timing of the lights and mapping the route that made all the difference here. Either way, it does seem silly to wait at the lights in some of those instances.

Pause it at 8:20

Top speed was 111mph. He got lucky on Red lights and traffic.

I would like to know this as well. The beginning of the video shows them in front of what looks to be a Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice? But that could just be to fool anyone trying to track them down. Later driving shots in the vid do show a silver hood though.

The silver hood also has the same hood vents on the pontiac/saturn in the beginning. I don’t think this would take a particularly powerful car though. I think the end result is one of GOOD planning, and a little bit of luck with the traffic lights on the back stretch (west side highway?)

Fucking bitchin’. I wanna know what car it was too.

EDIT:

Just saw the two above posts. You seriously think they did it in a Solstice/Sky? Sweet!

I’d be lying to you if I said since I moved down here Nick and I haven’t been talking about this everytime we go into Manhattan.

A light changer in your car would make this a pretty easy record to beat.

YEAH! 56.43 MPH AVERAGE!

Seems like a lot of work just to average 1.43mph over the double nickle. lol

Considering how long it took him to catch and overtake cars at 5.5x record speed you could tell he wasn’t going all that fast most of the time. Anyone willing to take more risks, run a few lights and use their research into best time of day could definitely crush that time. Someone Rendezvous in Paris in insane would probably come in under 15 minutes.

You’re assuming that traffic will be as clear as it was on that night, when most of the time there is construction or serious delays. They got lucky this night after trying 6 times.

I’ll try to watch this later tonight…

Weak, it didn’t look 5.5 times faster when he passed people.

Another lap record, happened on Monday:

stock z4!

NYPD charged Tang with speeding, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, traffic device violation, moving from a lane unsafely, and following too closely. They impounded his British Columbia-registered blue BMW Z4

A Canadian Z4
