Federal Safety Officials debating lowering DUI % from .08 down to .05

First Offense - Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol (DWAI)
Fine:$300 - $500
Max Jail Time: 15 days
License Revocation: Suspended for 90 days

So it is little more than doubled my tint ticket? THEY ARE SERIOUS ABOUT CRACKING DOWN ON DRUNK DRIVERS!

First offense should be license revocation for 1 year. 2nd offense should be You are not allowed to drive for 10 years. Increase the fine as well.

Do you usually get your license suspended for 3 months for a tint ticket?

first offense for what? DWAI (.05-.07)? DWI (.08-1.7)? Aggravated DWI (1.8+)?

For A-DWI, you do get a 1 year revocation, plus up to a year in jail on first offense. Second offense is up to 4 years in jail with an 18 month revocation.

Really the kicker with all of these convictions, is that your even though the license revocations are short periods (relatively), the insurance costs are so high on second/third offenses, that you almost couldn’t afford to own a car.

I’d say for DWI and up. With the inability to pleed down (not sure if that is available or not).

In my opinion, driving drunk is probably the dumbest thing one can do next to smoking meth.

The penalites need to be higher. If you make the uneducated decison to drive while your ability is impaired, you should be held responsible for your actions.

Other issues with DWI include security clearances and background checks for jobs

DWAI won’t do that I think its only a violation

DWI = misdemeanor/or possible felony

problem with the dwi laws is the fines dont go down, but penalties can with the right lawyer. the reduction wont save lives or make anyone rethink driving drunk. theyll do it anyways.

its all about bringing in more $$$.

If they increase penalties and lower limits it WILL cause more people to rethink and cause the numbers to drop.

Even if you have 5% of people thinking “Oh shit I could get in way more trouble” the number will go down.

On the other side of that states/towns will make more money off fines

You’re always going to have X percent of people who will break the law no matter what law it is murder, assault, etc

Cops don’t actually do anything for DWAI now. It’s just something to plead down to that won’t stay on your record, in return for getting ass raped on the fine, when you get arrested for DWI.

So why not just convict accordingly now, you know like gun control? Are the alcoholics going to go away because of a new law? Hell no.

Don’t have a friend to drive and you want to drink, get a cab. Cab prices > possibly killing someone/fines from DWI/having a felony on your record.

The cab will cost you more than the 3 beers you will drink and then be illegal to drive. I hate how anytime someone tries to defend their right to have a few beers and drive home, they are automatically assumed to be defending drunk driving. Hell, I don’t even drink anymore and I don’t agree with this law being put into place. I feel this is just another person trying to make a name for themselves by raising the bar on what laws can be put into place. Watching this woman on tv trying to justify why she thinks this needs to be put into place makes me sick. Just like Cuomo is on his high horse about passing these gun laws. Half the reason he wants it is because his name is attached to it and he knows it will bring lots of attention.

Boom. Issue here is NO ONE is responsible for their own actions.

No and they never will. Instead of attacking the problem, they seem to want to try and reinvent the wheel and go to their elbow to get to their asshole. Let’s come up with another way to fix the problem that won’t involve us actually fixing the problem. :bloated:

You can’t FIX the issue.

It way easier to increase the penalties to a point that with curve the actions of MOST people.

You will always get the people who have multiple DWIs or a DWI with an already suspended license.

Why don’t I drink and drive? I worry about losing my career/job could I probably drive fine with a .06 BAC sure…but the chance of throwing my career away over drinking isn’t worth it.

Once I bought a nice car, a house and got myself a nice job, I was not willing to risk it anymore, so I completely understand that. I didn’t mean to say “fix” because I obviously know you can’t fix it. But you can attack the core of the problem and this does not do that. Just like limiting rounds in a gun does not fix that problem either. Stating that lowering the limit will saves lives is what makes me mad because they are only assuming that it will. It will also only increase revenue for the government on a state and federal level which I believe is the main push behind this law.

But at what point are laws strong enough? Once they start changing human behavior? Once corporations have made enough profit by locking up enough people in jail? When only 10 people per year die of something? When only 1 person per year die of something? When your “imaginary friend in the sky” says the law is strong enough? What defines strong enough punishment?

But technically it’s not the state/feds who will get the $$… seeing private corporations are now running a lot of our prison systems… Now that the drug laws are laxing in some areas, these for-profit companies are loosing “customers”…

You are correct in that, but how many times have you seen these DWI’s get reduced to less severe charges and the courts reap the benefit of charging their surcharges and not allowing it get through to the state/federal level. I know you see it more in speeding tickets than anything and I realize that is totally different, but you catch my drift.

It’s pretty simple I don’t care if you smoke weed, get hammered drunk, whatever at home, friends, or anywhere else.

If you get in a vehicle you’re putting other people in danger

Driving is NOT a right

This is something that is completely preventable there is 0 reason for someone to get drunk and drive.

People can make whatever excuse “Taxis are expensive” “nobody else could drive” but when they go driving up the 33 in the wrong direction and wipe out some family or run over some girl skate boarding…oops no big deal it only takes a small fuck up in a 4000lb vehicle to kill innocent people.
