Finally went to the dragstrip

So I finally went to the dragstrip.

I never had the chance to go wih my red S13 and now with the black one all done I finally went.

I have never done a burn out, or a hard launch from a stop in my life… I have done a rolling start and then ripped it before on the street but that is it.

We went off to St. Thomas Dragway on Saturday, the day was nice, cool air, hit 20 degrees, and it wasn’t too busy so we got 13 runs in. The day was a Test and Tune day.

Below are my times, the car is a stock 1992 S13 with a stock SR, 3" exhaust, FMIC, boost controller, and fully loaded as i drive it on the street with power everything and A/C. I am running on Megan Coilovers, 17x8.5 GramLights, and 225/45/17 Kumho SPT all around. I didn’t remove anything from the car for the track.

My first run was (stock boost):
Reaction: + .6321
60 ft: 2.3417
330 ft: 6.3650
1/8 ET: 9.6488
1/8 MPH: 75.51
1/4 ET: 14.7159
1/4 MPH: 95.32

My Best run (10psi):
Reaction: + .7749
60 ft: 2.2851
330 ft: 6.2220
1/8 ET: 9.4791
1/8 MPH: 76.40
1/4 ET: 14.4979
1/4 MPH: 97.19

All my other runs varied from 14.6 to 15.0 due to my horrbile launching skills, I either bogged or over revved and spun the tires tooo much. On my last run I got a super slow 17.1, I tried a higher rev launch but attempted to feather the clutch. Well I launched the car while feathering the clutch, then as it begun to grip i let go of the clutch and it started to go but then it started slipping. I then grabbed 2nd but it slipped right away, i feathered the throttle but it kept slipping. I popped it into 3rd and it finally grabbed and i made it down the track in 17… +1 for the EBay XTD Stage 2 clutch! 30,000KM on it and it lasted 12 runs before it finally decided to slip! I hate the smell of burning clutch.

I will probably be going back in March, anyone have any tips out there? (other then get a new f*cking decent clutch)

Your launches look decent… a 2.2 60’ for a guy with no experiance i pretty good. Those times how ever… should be a world better. Low 14’s high 13’s should be easily achivable on that setup. The best way to get a better time is to improve the launches. Stock SR 3-4,000 is around where you should be launching. Lower the tire presure in the rear start at about 30 then drop it one psi per run from there until you find a spot you like. Also drop the damping on your coils down, not all the way down but low between 1-5. Other then that…yea buy a real clutch.

I run ~28psi HOT on my 245 Good year GSD3’s and on a good day I can pull off 1.8 60’s. Just to give you an idea of what to shoot for.

Good luck next time around.

Those numbers sound about right. Not bad at all but yeah, you can definitely be in the 13s.

I ran 13.9 in my stock SR, just 3 inch exhaust and thats it.

I either can’t shift or suck hard at launching, I think it is my launching…
I just couldn’t get a good launch, and the rear would hop and jerk when i would get a decent launch and that would kill it

Launching pointers?

Launching pointers?

Say launch and launching a bit less, and that will launch to bo better launching during your launch.

When’s lunch?

I have nothing more to contribute to this thread. Continue please.

subframe collars would help that wheel hop.

peace

^^^ or better yet, new bushings.

I have subframe bushings (whiteline) and they do help but not a whole lot.

You almost need to ‘ride’ your clutch and not just drop it like it’s hot.

BTW, What kind of clutch do you have?

with turbo cars at the track, i’ve had the best sucess with the lower-mid RPM slip-dump launching technique.

this is a pretty general thing and varies between cars (i haven’t tracked a 240 with an SR yet) but it seems to work with most cars. basically you’ll launch around 3000-4000 RPM, start by aggressively slipping the clutch (if you smell clutch, you’re slipping it too much) while getting on the gas hard until you have a few pounds of boost, then dump the clutch and go.

obviously this depends a lot on your setup, sort of a general thing to try.
