finally

That remains to be seen. Ed Rendell is a sleazy lying fucking Philly mobster thug. If you listened closely to what he said yesterday, several times he said “the commonwealth will cover that”. Well, the commonwealth is…taxpayers!
Government does not produce anything, so it cannot create wealth, it can only confiscate wealth(taxes). His “economic development fund” is taxpayer money. A “bond issue” is basically a loan that the taxpayers are on the hook to repay. I just do not trust Rendell.
As to economic development, quality of life, and retaining the young, Pittsburgh has to make some very fundamental changes(as does PA). Pittsburgh is one of the more business hostile cities thanks to 50+ years of one party rule, and the ensuing graft and corruption that accompanies that. Tom Murphy single handidly did more damage to Pittsburgh than any terrorist could have done. A city can not tax it’s way to prosperity, nor can it build it’s way there. Command economies do not work.
For there to be any kind of meaningful turnaround, Pittsburgh needs to do some serious tax cutting and service cutting. They need to break the stranglehold that the unions have on the politicians here once and for all. Taxes need to be slashed…then the economy will respond. It will take a few years, but it can be done. Many thriving cities have done it. The first few years are very painful, but the lasting result more than compensates for that.
Unfortunatly, i seriously doubt it will ever happen here. So we can build all the new sports facilities we want, but people and businesses will continue to leave.

yeah thats a genius idea, put it in the already impossible traffic quagmire of the northside…plus a casino.

again i know first hand that heinz and PNC get used a lot more than people know about… true the actual stadiums don’t get used as much as an arena, the hospitality facilities are regularly used.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=pit scroll down to madden’s 3/13 pod cast… the bit starts at 21:00. FUnny as fuck

I see what you mean but he said the total coming out of the “economic development fund” is 10 Million out of the 90 million there. I would say the money is getting spent on what it was put there for. That money was there b4 the deal and is being used for what it was put there for. I agree this city is in a mess and cannot tax it way out of a mess. That is a whole other deal though. I think the city is trying to improve as well as it can to help produce more interest for people to come to the city. But this will take time and money so we’ll just have to sit back and see where it all goes and hope the people in power make good decisions. That is just my view on it…keep in mind I have the personality where I try not to get worked up about things out of my power.

To put this back on topic…we all should be glad the Pens are staying and Pgh is getting a well needed MULTIPURPOSE arena. Every thread in Pittspeed History that has politics within in it total assturds and always goes to shit

the whole arguement about mansion in the ghetto really doesnt hold that much weight because if you listened to the ress conference, there is a garaunteed agreement with money in this plan that will re-develop a certain amount of land in the surrounding area (hill district) each year, with money also going to that. and its not just something that they want to happen its al documented and garaunteed to have developments all around the new arena. the ppl of the hill district will attend the meetings and there views will be take into consideratoin on all of this. so we keep our team, we rebuild one of the most beat-ass sections of the city and make it nice and we get a new arena…ya, we should all be pissed:rolleyes:

dude… if you believe that bullshit about redeveloping the ‘surrounding areas’ then i don’t have anything to say…

they are going to redevelop whatever they have to bulldoze in order to get their shit done… once that’s done, they are out of town and soon will follow is the money surrounding the project…

i guess we’ll see… and bics, go fuck yourself… i’m not an ass turd or an idiot or someone that doesn’t use ‘obvious facts’… i thought an ‘obvious fact’ was that you do not take what any politician says for truth or honesty…

Wooh calm down big nuts…not saying you were an assturd.,…just saying threads about politics on here are ass turds. I have a similiar view on polititions as you…but I try not to get worked up over anything to do with politics b/c as you said they cannot be trusted. From what was said about this deal I really don’t see anything negative. So no need for the go fuck yourself comment…calm down buddy

let’s not forget the majestic star casino doesn’t have a liscense it’s being appealed so the casino might end up in the other 2 places.

Im just glad the Pens are staying. All the bullshit about taxes and whatever else Im not worried about.

yeah… that’s the problem…

for real, how coud someone that doesn’t live in the city or county get it.

and a fair amount of the money for the new multipurpose facility is dependent on tax revenue from casinos. Casinos that haven’t been in existence for more than 3 months. All of these projected revenues that were thrown around in the discussions are probably crap, and we will just be taxed to cover a bad projection.

WV is exploring table gaming in a bill that was proposed about 2 weeks ago. If that goes through, it’s going to be even harder for the pa slots parlors to meet that projection.

As was stated, pittsburgh has more problems in drawing concerts than an old arena. Union wages and taxes cut into a promoter’s bottom line more than the lack of a sweet ass stadium…

Happy the pens are staying. Not happy that I’m going to get bent over on my property taxes.

DUDE you’re WRONG… didn’t you listen to the news conference… it’s FREE … DUH… why do you hate pittsburgh???

lol… j/k

ha ha ha, sweet. Maybe tirerack will let me pay for my order with my “economic redevelopment fund”…

O you:love: me
