Find out what sound card you have with no driver?

So my roommate had to get a new HD and didnt have a drivers CD, only XP. Now he’s got it loaded, and it didnt install the driver for his sound card. The PC was a custom job and he can’t get a hold of the person who did it. What’s the easiest way of finding out what sound card he has in there so i can try and find him a driver?

If the sound’s built into the mobo, you should be able to download the drivers from the manufacturer, if it’s a separate card it may say what it is on the card (I’m pretty sure all the creative cards I’ve had have said what they are on the card)…In both cases you’ll probably need to open the case up and take a look

Open the case and take a look. If it’s built into the motherboard, check the manufacturers website they usually have something. If it’s a card it should have a manufacturer/model number on it somewhere.

If it’s a really generic card or you can’t find anything obvious on it you can always look up the FCC-ID on the card.
