Buffalo Firefighters are on the scene of a 3-Alarm fire right now at the corner of Genesee and Bailey.
Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo confirms two firefighters did not make it out. He says they thought they heard someone pounding for help in the basement. When they went in for the rescue, the main floor collapsed under them.
No names are being released at this time.
Genesee is closed from Bailey to Burgard. Drivers should also keep in mind that there are lane restrictions on the 33 near Bailey that may make for a slower commute.
2 On Your Side has a crew on the scene of the fire and will continue to keep you informed of the latest developments throughout the morning.
rip and best wishes to the family.
anyone live around this to tell anything about the fire?
To all firefighters out there. big thumbs up to you guys and a big thanks for taking the job and taking care of everyone that is out there. it takes a lot of guts to be able to run into a burning building, not knowing what will happen, and when things like this happen, it just a big downer to everyone, especially all firefighters and keeping there composure when it comes to the next fire now.
i’ve been keeping tabs on this all morning. really sucks to hear. i’ve been dealing with commissioner Lombardo quite a bit lately because we are hoping to sell the City of Buffalo several trucks coming up. He is a very nice guy. RIP to the firemen, i hope everything else turns out okay.
Two Buffalo firefighters were killed in an early-morning fire at a deli on Genesee Street on the city’s East Side, the department’s worst loss of life in the last 26 years.
The dead were identified as Lt. Charles “Chip” McCarthy and firefighter Jonathan Croom.
The deaths were confirmed at about 9:50 a.m. by the Rev. Derren L. Young, Erie County Medical Center chaplain. The bodies were taken out of the building on gurneys draped with American flags.
RIP
Have to say I was a little worried about this because my landlord and a friend of mine from my Army days work down there…
McCarthy leaves behind his wife, three children and a 6-month-old grandchild. Croom leaves behind a 9-month-old child and a fiancee. A few years ago, Croom himself lost a young child.
