So I finally got project 570sx “Doom” done, and had the chance last Monday to get the car out and break the fresh motor in. It was at the Kensia Lapping day at Mosport.
got the car off the trailer, and went out for the first lap… taking it easy and not over revving it…since it has 0km on the engine. I was however loading the engine just not revving it too high…
Oil pressures were great, and coolent temps did not go above 180…so engine was running very nice…
then on the back straight I noticed white smoke coming from the car…shit!!! I got flagged off the track. I go to the pits and look under the car…its dripping power steering fluid onto the headers…not good.
go to the pits…jack the car up and the PS fitting on the rack is leaking (special GM to nissan fitting) tighting it up abit…still leaks… so i zip tied a rag to it to suck up the liqued…
get to go out another 10 laps for the rest of the day maybe…ohh well… this is only the 2nd time for me even at this track… VERY fun track…however not the track to be pushing it breaking in the engine…
how car performed…
The Ls1 weighed in over 2800lbs fully fueled…and shifted the weight to the front by 1.5%…however for ease of installtion…i moved the battery to the front as well…so that can always be corrected. So the car is about the same weight as it was before with the turbo system.
The Ls1 is an effortless engine, it does not feel overworked…nor does it get very hot…while running I could not break 180 on the water temps…and underhood temps were very cool… so thats great…
1,2,3 all can spin the tires…and 4th is a nice gear too, 5th is too seprated from 4th but still pulls great…
on the last 2 laps before I had to pull the car off the track…I let the engine rev out…and took 5b hard so I got a proper launch on the back straight… I was able to put the cars computer into shut off in 5th gear… which is at 6200rpm…working back that comes to 251kph on the back straight…which is mighty fast…
short shifting on privious runs 230kph was pretty easy to get too…and the engine was not working hard at all…
anyway… the car seemed twitchy under the new power…and at 251kph…i threw a wheel weight so the rear was shit after that…and the nose was VERY light…scary light…there was the option to breifly grab 6th gear…however I have no experinace at this track, and stopping from that speed would be hard
we dont run Mosport in Solosprint very often so it wont be an issue. The car will be a very good point and shoot car…since the torque is instant and very hard.
Most of the lapping day i was just chugging around short shifting …and did not have much trouble keeping up with some silly cars in the straights…
tires… i think 245’s are a bit small for the car now…so next year will be custom rims and will try to get some 305’s on the rear.
in the end this was a great powerplant choice…as its in its stock form…and has TONS of power adder mods that can be done in the future.
PS Sasha…really knows Mosport very well…and was doing some 1:27’s and 1:28’s while we were there…it was good to see him out there pushing it. There were also some neat porsches and BMW’s out, and only 1 car was lost the day…a red 944 into the wall at corner 4.
anyway…the handling will hve to be sorted out, alignment done, new tires…and PS leak fixed. Engine wise however …no issues and when i really start pushing the motor…its gonna really move…
