Fitness Gurus - Lower Back

goodmornings bring the pain (the good kind!), sometimes even make me puke a little. Love em!

I’m gonna try the good mornings. We’ll see how it goes. I’m gonna have to build something heavyish that I can hold the way the bar is held. I don’t have any weights nor do I really need a whole set. I’m not looking to gain upper muscle, even leg muscle. I’m fine the way I am. The only issue I have is I’m cardiovasculararly out of shape. And the fact that I have a 90yr old back. lol. Hopefully just running, playing sports, and doing the good mornings will sort my issues out.

deads and goodmornings but go light!!! dont listen to this asshat going heavy. esp if u have spine issues.

what about wearing a weight belt?

heavy as possible, lift abruptly with your back in a jerking twisting motion.

don’t listen to that meat headed FUCK

I was thinking like 20lbs. Is that too much? I think my dad has a big ass hammer (handle is like 4ft) that weighs around that (maybe more) that I could use as a bar of sorts. Should do the trick. Just need to wear construction gloves before lifting it cause it’s rusted to hell lol.

Haha he wants strength in his lower back. Resistance is gonna build strength, repetition isn’t the key. Besides if he’s never done deadlifts before his forearms strength is going to severely limit the amount of weight that ends up being “heavy” for him. That’s just my two cents.

Regardless of what you do Ilya , just make sure you’re form is perfect(especially with the back issues). I wouldn’t just start at it on your own, have someone who knows check your form, before you add any weight to the exercise. While good mornings are really simple, I’d still start off with maybe just a broom handle in place of a bar(or hammer), to get your muscles and joints used to the motion. Every bodies range of motion on them is different regardless because of flexibility. If you can watch yourself in a mirror while doing it, that’d be good for starting as well.

Planet Fitness has a $10 a month membership and theyre everywhere. There must be one close to you.

I personally go to Best because its close to my house and its a good gym. Same gym Emanuel goes to.

I find that when a part of my body hurts working out with some extra concentration on that body part really helps.

i have degenative joint disease it affects my lower back ,hands and knees ,my back is the worst by far but i also have scoliosis so that dont help much either .one med is the only o.t.c that really works and its glucosamine .takes about a month to really work but try it i honestly feel better with it .but i also take like 8 diff pills a day for this shit soooooo ,but so far that is what worked the best

we give that to my dog for arthritis and it seems to help him. He used to limp every now and then when he got up but hasnt done that since we started giving him the glucosomine.

Thank you for the advice. I will definitely keep it in mind. I’ll start off with a shovel or something, which is definitely lighter than that hammer I mentioned earlier (looks like a hammer they use to drive spikes into the railroad lol). I’m actually pretty strong in the upper body. I did a bench of 180 after doing reps of 120, 140, and 160. Like I said, my upper body is fine. It’s just my lower back which I want to try to reinforce any way I can and try to help my spine out.

Thanks John. The medicine I’ve been drinking for the last 6 months or so (Joint Advantage Gold) has Glucosamine and like 50 other herbs and such. I’ve gotten limited results from it thus far. I have two bottles (one at work and one at home) and both are about halfway done. Maybe by the time I finish, I’ll be a little better.

This back is just hampering me from getting fully into shape. I can’t run or play intense sports for more than 20 minutes before my back and legs give out on me.

Thanks for the advice guys. I appreciate it.

you cant just go telling someone with back issues to start deadlifting heavy. wtf is wrong with u?

He’s not telling me to. Some other dude was, and I promptly dismissed his post. I know enough about this stuff to realize that probably isn’t the best thing for me to do.

he wasnt huh?

:rofl

For some reason I thought someone else said it. Probably should have checked the first page before my last post.

Morning fail.

im not disagreeing that heavy weight will make u strong. im saying that u need to start really super light.

I think we can all agree on that. I’m not looking to get strong. I’m happy benching 180-200. I don’t wanna be huge or able to bench (or dead lift, or anything else) 400+ like you guys. I have no interest in that kind of working out.

I really worded it wrong. I didn’t mean “start” heavy, I meant “go for” heavy. Like I said in that second post, form first, then weight. I was more referring to the amount of reps/sets. As in, don’t just lift some feather 20 times in a row, because that’s really not optimal for building strength.

And good luck Ilya, hope it gets better for you.

Thanks. I’m going to try to formulate a plan using everyone’s suggestions and go from there. Thanks again folks.

Do some weighted hyperextensions…

Don’t hold a barbell behind your neck like the video shows, instead, ‘hug’ a plate or dumbell. Start light, as in nothing. Do it no more than twice a week for 3 sets or so. Last thing you probably want to do is start out with deadlifts.
