so regardless of how this happened, there has been talk about icing on the wings, why is it that they dont have any sort of heating on the wings, i know it adds weight, but couldnt they do something like they have for heated tile floors. for example, running something this they have in this picture, where hot water is constantly flowing threw the lines.

Unfortunately water wouldn’t cut it… It would have to be something with a lower freezing point.

And to get it in a position where it could heat the surface of the wing, I would imagine that would compromise structural integrity?

Anti icing IS HUGE! there are a million ways to do it.

yeah seriously, if they didnt have de-icing and ice regularly formed on the wings of planes, it would change their shape and they simply wouldn’t fly.

5000 gallons of fuel makes a very large explosion. People had to feel it for miles. I would doubt 15 miles, but def. miles.

I was less than 5 miles away and I didn’t feel anything. If I hadn’t gone into work 15 minutes early I might have seen/heard it.

they already do have methods of deicing for in-flight. im just not sure what the methods actually are.

they fly… bleed air valves get stuck closed. and anti icing fails

OMG we raised our floor temp inside our house by a few degrees…why don’t they use the same technology on air planes :bloated:

I would imagine with the large number of flights occurring daily during the winter months deicing must be working pretty effectively or they would be having crashes like this on a daily basis.
