??? for car dealer employees...

I was negotiating a new XXXXX at XXXXX dealership and I suggested throwing in some accessories because they cost the dealer very little.
The “manager” said, “No way, we don’t make any money on accessories”.
I said (good heartedly), “Come on they are marked up about 100%”.
He got way mad and said I insulted him.

I am 99.99% sure that accessories are marked up HUGE but, some confirmation would be nice.

You can pm me if you don’t want to divulge your employers pricing secrets to the NYSpeed world.

Thanks.

(There is a lot more fun stuff about this encounter but I just typed the Cliff notes.)

audi, vw, chrysler, jeep plymouth and chrysler parts are all the same markup EXACTLY

60 cost to the dealership = 100 selling price

making 6 dollar parts 10, and 600 dollar parts 1000

the only diff is if the dealership doesnt sell the part at suggested retail

So you are saying suggested list price is even higher then?

66.66% is still a pretty healthy mark-up, especially if it could seal a deal.
In other words I wanted another $500 and ask for $500 worth of accessories at list!!!
This brand includes installation too.
He said that is where they lose out so I told him I would install them myself which pissed him off even more.

500 in accersories is taking money out of the sales persons pocket

Good point.
2 in the hand is better than 1 in the bush though.

Edit: The salesman was actually cool but the “manager” had sand in his pussy from the start.
Maybe they were playing good cop/bad cop.:gotme:

usualy parts that include installation are marked up further

nothings ever “everything included, for free!” in real life

@ the hyundai dealershit i was working @

the pinstriping cost the dealership 22 bux and we put it on every car, and charged 300 for it… the wheel guards (plastic protector that goes in the arch) cost us 4 and they charged 100

for stuff like automotive accesories its usualyl a 40% markup

tell them youll pay cost + 10% + tax on the accessories you want

warning … this will also piss them off to no end , because dealerships have this idea that if they dont sell parts at FULL msrp, they aere somehow loosing money on the sale … as in spending MORTE then u are paying

when i worked at schmitts i sold A DOZEN audi spoilers in one week on ebay and the day i went in to start ordering them thru parts, Tim schmitt found out … he asked WTF i thought i was doing … i told him “it took me a day to make as much money for the dealership on spoilers as parts does in a year” … seriously, that year we sold ONE spoiler

he went into a big rant that selling the spoilers at the discount i was was actualy causing the dealership money oh shipping and payroll and commission blah blah blah

to bad norm was doing the ordering when he was off the clock for me, and he wasnt on commision either …

Factory accessories are listed in the on line dealer price guides (what they pay for options) other than that like others said them make a killing on stupid shit. They wouldn’t do it for nothing (not worth their time)

X…

accessories are where they make their money/bonuses.

its not 40%, its 40 points, that comes out to cost plus 80%.

thats pretty much a standard in retail anything.

mike, he’s full of shit. just try to get the money out of him somewhere else. like if you buy 1 accessory he tosses one in, or a set of snow tires, but it sounds like he wants more out of the deal. just make him think he is “winning” by throwing him a bone and he will become more helpful.

When I sold cars at Don Davis we didnt make jack on accessories so we didnt push them.

or you can always just order parts/accessorys from online wholesale dealers…
i got a list of parts that i needed from fenton dodge in Michigan and also mopar super center they are pretty much both wholesale
then i went to northtown dodge… the prices i got from fenton were only a few cents more than the dealers cost at northtown… so he said theres no way he could sell them to me at that price… so guess where i’m buying them from… fenton dodge

I wouldn’t bother paying marked up dealer prices depending on what accessories…if it’s stuff u can buy cheaper w/o going through them, then I would say just get it after and put it on the car urself…I had the monsoon setup in my grand am, and let me tell you, for the price they charge to “upgrade” the sound system, you can def go buy wayy better aftermarket audio stuff that will sound 100x better and last much longer…take it from someone who has gone through it, the “infinity” sound system they put in their cars is nothing more than plain old construction paper speakers with grilles that have the inifnity logo stamped on them and the same old factory headunit with (you guessed it) the infinity logo on it…o yea, and I’ve seen a couple GM “BOSE” systems that have DELCO written on the magnet of the speakers…same with factory alarm/keyless…if they’re gonna throw it in for almost nothing, then go for it, but if they’re gonna make u pay a couple hundred, just go to a place that does alarms and get an aftermarket one…most factory alarms are just stupid theft deterrants anyway

Believe me, I know I can buy cheaper on e-bay etc but, I was trying to sweetin the deal on a new purchase.
I just wondered why they didn’t bite that’s all.
