FRANKENSTORM 2012

Agreed. I’m guessing they did it based on the possibility that if large areas started to lose power, they would have no way to communicate this information to the students/parents.

Outside of the costal areas that were warned where did anything extreme happen?

blizzards in WV and a lot of snow in western NC as well. Nothing catastrophic though.

Frankly, lame excuse anyways. Irene did a TON of damage in inland areas all the way up to Vermont and NH just a year ago.

Lol its the principle as a commentary on society…

Were overprotective pussies
We overly biased based on past experiences and neglect probability

Being proactive isnt always the best economic option especially upon weighing the risks.

Well that’s just like, your opinion, man.

Seriously. Why did they close schools just because the largest tropical storm in recorded history to hit the northeast was coming? It probably wasn’t going to knock out power and overflow the sewers. Kids in the city probably weren’t going to have to ford knee deep water to get to school.

I mean, it’s not like a day of school is unimportant. That’s an entire day they’ll never get back. The school programs will have to change now. It’s learning they’ll never receive.

Now, if they made allowances in their schedules for a certain number of weather closings then I can see how this may have been a good day to use one. But they don’t plan on losing a few days to weather related closings. Right?

Edit: found the warning for high wind

I blame the internet, 24/7 news, and social media for ramping up hype and pressure on school districts etc to close prematurely.

Meh, it’s because our superintendents are overpaid morons.

I decided to pull an LZ last night and drove south starting at 4am. Was 50+ degrees in Buffalo, then entered heavy rain, then into 30 degree temps and accumulating SNOW only to arrive down south in 50 degree temps again. It was fun

This is a pretty wild video.

Daughter: “there’s a fire at the end of the fucking street”
idiot dad: “well there is nothing I can do about that”

Its not the weather guys causing all of the hype and overreaction, its the general population. I think the forecast was good, may not have been perfectly accurate but its up to you to decide what the threats may be to yourself and how to best prepare for them. We get 65 mph winds from time to time, there’s no reason to clear the supermarkets of milk and bread in preparation.

for bobbyg…posted by the buffalo NWS earlier today:

The impacts from Sandy are over for Western NY. The leftover circulation may pass directly over Buffalo by early Wednesday, but it will be insignificant terms of weather.

“i hate to be that guy but… show me the video.”

Michael Brown, Of ‘Heckuva Job’ Fame, Says Obama Reacted Too Fast To Hurricane Sandy

If there is ONE person on this planet who needs to keep his mouth shut…so he comes out and says OBAMA REACTED TOO SOON to this storm.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

or see any of the other sources.

No flipping way.

i hate humans.

Bingo!

Lol in case anyone overlooks this, YES there are days budgeted in every school year so we don’t “lose” school days to events like this.

If anyone really wants a laugh, Syracuse University, LeMoyne College, and Colgate all closed today, while the majority of CNY schools were open.

Oops I accidentally quoted this :snky:
