Fried Chicken Thread

You’re thinking Popeye’s… you’re wrong.

On a good day in a core market where white or black people own and operate it… sure… but Popeye’s apparently has a franchising kiosk set up right as you get off the boat from wherever and you cannot trust most of their stores now even though on a good day it’s good.

My wife got food poisoning from Popeye’s when she was 7.5 months pregnant, we went to the hospital because we thought it was baby-time.

anyhow, Josh took me to a place downtown that was reasonable, i forget what it was but it wasnt good enough and i want some good fried chicken dammnit.

The Drake in Toronto is good, i had their chicken and waffles the other day. Bar Isabel put their fried chicken on the late night menu only and i’m married with kids and a curfew to that doesn’t work for me.

Stockyards is said to have the best in Toronto… i didnt have it when i was there but i’m going back.

Still, im in WNY as often as Toronto and i KNOW there is has to be some hidden gems in the area… if the fried chicken is half as good as all that pizza i’m applying for dual citizenship.

GO!

Black Rock Kitchen & Bar has a great fried chicken entree…

There ain’t no good good fried chicken north of the mason dixon line my friend.

Pretty much this

Same thing with biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, and a number of other foods.

Deep fried pickles, corn nuggets, collard greens, bacon and boiled cabbage, fried okra, Tex Mex (Or just Mexican food)…

Want to get fat and eat some of the best food in your life? Visit Houston and bring some $$.

I had chicken and waffles in Jacksonville . Metro maybe? It was good. Guy fietti had been there

FYI, Chicken and Waffles is NOT a southern dish. That ish originated in Harlem or PA or something.

I will be headed down to Louisiana later this year, pumped for some fried chicken and a crawfish boil! #sexmymouth

Bing & I want to Fat Bobs.

Honestly, this is not my style of food. However fried pickles are surprisingly good when they’re SPEARS and not overdone.

There are a few places that have decent fried chicken in WNY but I agree, it’s not like the south.

Netties on Main st. in University Heights wasn’t bad.

Shango Bistro was actually really good. Also in University Heights.

I have not tried Taste of Soul but here is a review. Real Fried Chicken.

UPDATE: Taste of Soul has since closed.

Hum.

Find a black friend and get them to take you to one of the “black only” soul food places in the ghetto. The place is dirty as hell. Your choice of drink is coolaid and you get a side of buttered bread. I’m not joking about any of this. Seriously the best place for chicken or ribs. I don’t know the name of it or what part of the ghetto. I think it was on broadway or off it?

Nette’s is very good, haven’t been there in a year or 2, but liked it a lot…

my brother and i went to a place like this like 6 years ago… it was GOOD but it’s not there anymore.

Just make your own.

Get chicken parts, brine them for a day and use what ever seasonings you like.

Good brine for fried chicken.

Kosher salt
Honey
Orange juice
Franks hot sauce
Water

Chicken coating

Flour
Cayenne/ Cajun
Kosher salt
Lemon pepper
Dried rosemary

  1. Coat with dry mix

  2. Put it in water (can substitute with buttermilk ranch or just buttermilk)

  3. Coat with dry mix again

  4. Deep fry till golden brown

  5. Place chicken on a baking/cookie cooling rack that will go on a sheet pan. This will allow it to stay crispy top and bottom.

375-400° till internal temperature reaches 165°.

I like to mix ranch and franks hot sauce for dipping.

Any questions feel free to ask.

^^^ i have already made that request at home.

I just remembered something: http://www.memphisfirebbq.com/

This place has the best beef brisket and pulled pork that i’ve ever had. It is literally worth driving up here for it (not to you WNY’ers).

They do fried chicken Monday - Wednesday only… i’m going next week. anyone else down?

Revelry in Rochester - Chicken & Waffles for brunch.

So good it made me cry. Reminded me of my 8 years in the South - never had anything up North that could touch this.

Going to give this a try sometime…

Trying this tonight! Any specifics on the measurements for the brine and coating?
