A buddy of mine found a 1994 Infiniti G20 with a Sr20 swap into it. The car has been sitting for three years in storage and he is selling it. The car has a list of modifications to it. We are going to look at it tomorrow, I need to know some things to look to look out for when looking the car over with him.
I would check the the transmission for sure. Those trannies are known to have a weak 3rd gear. Maybe check shaft play in the turbine. Check the oil pan for dents, if the oil pan gets hit too hard the oil pick-up will snap off inside the pan. If he buys the car I would definitely recommend removing the oil pan and seeing which oil pick up is on it, there is an upgrade if it has the crappy one. Other than that not too much that goes wrong with the sr20det.
Well, I went to look at the car for him because he had to work. I’ll show the pictures first and then tell you the list of problems I’ve found.
The car’s appearance is good, has paint from four years ago. But mechanically, it needs some TLC. Here are the problems I’ve found with it:
Power steering line leaks from a tear.
Turbo has alot a surge.
Turbo spikes boost alot.
Needs new rotors/pads.
Car will die at idle.
There is some rust on the driverside doorjams.
Tear in the rubber boot on the steering rack.
Overheats badly, coolant was boiling.
Needs a new battery.
There is a hole in the trunk from where someone burnt through it with a torch while doing an exhaust.
With all of these problems, he wanted to get 4,000 for it. He asked my my honest opinion on it and I told him he may be lucky to get 2,500 for it with the condition it is in. What should my friend do?
if there is rust on the a-post, im afraid to see what is under the side skirts and on the floor pan. g-2o/sentra/nx’s are good for rotting at the 1/4 panels on the dog leg/lower rocker area. alot of them are pretty damn rusty on the front rocker area where the fender heel attaches to the body too.
also, did you take pics after running it? as that valve cover looks like it had more stuff blown on it than a pornstar’s face. would wanna do a compression check to see if the heads popped from driving hot. may as well do a coolant system pressure test to see if it is something as stupid as air getting in the system keeping it from cooling down.
price wise, i’d say teh car as a roller is no more than 500 bucks. not sure what the fwd swaps go for. so add the two together and thats the price of a “parts” car. as it is not complete, so should not bring top dollar for taking on someone elses basketcase.
The shit on the valvecover is from the power steering line that was leaking. I checked under the car and there is some rust, nothing too bad though. I think I may of talked him out of buying the car. It seems like it would be too much trouble.
