My GF is selling her car to buy a house- she hates to sell, but priorities, etc…
it’s a good car, she’s had it for about 4 years, never let her down, and she is extremely anal about everything she owns. No Buffalo winters, originally from one of the Carolinas… I’ve done all the work on the car since she owned it…
Specs-
1989 VW Cabrio
last year CIS, first year clipper kit (best year, IMHO)
154k
5speed
red w/white top & white/black interior
new brakes
new ft tires
new pass cv joint
new plugs/wires/fuel and air filters etc
Nice Sony CD player
Nice alarm w/pager
Stored winters- never seen a buffalo winter
the good-
- 0 rust- she stores the car in the winter, inside, covered. No Buffalo Winters-it came from down south
- Mostly complete service history- including all the owners manuals and booklets.
- tight engine/transmission
- interior quite clean- no cracking of the dash, seats are slightly stained, but they just need to be cleaned. Only minor wear on the typical spots (drivers lower bolster)
- very loud alarm, with pager…
- decent head unit 2 years old
- Always starts and very reliable. Unmolested…i.e. no hack work done anywhere… all service work done by reputable shops or me personally.
The bad-
-top has some cracking in the typical spot they crack- on the sides near the middle of the doors- about 2.5 inches each side. Doesn’t leak except if you pressure wash it.
-Could probably stand an exhaust soon. not loud as is, but there is a little ticking, and I think the cat is starting to plug up.
-Shocks are getting weak- they are original, and although you could put it off for awhile, they will eventually need to be replaced.
-Injectors could use cleaning or replacing… slight misfiring on startup, clears right up, and the car runs fine after that, probably a poor spray pattern… not bad at all, but worth mentioning
-minor dents and dings, but the paint is pretty decent, and with a good buff could shine even better (VW red fades quickly, and I buffed it out 2 years ago, but could use it again… and probably will every 2 years or so, just the nature of the paint VW used in that era…)
the car starts, runs and drives great. the only thing that would prevent me from driving the car cross country might be the cat converter.
Talk to Matt (lowlyoilburner) and have him make up a custom stainless system for you… that’s what we were going to do if she kept the car.
PM me to see it… it’s located right off of Richmond ave, in Buffalo
