Guys this is the best $1400.00 you will ever spend on your car. I already bought one from Bing and so did my buddy Tom (if im not mistaking the pictures that Bing posted is actually my turbo lol). My buddy already put it on his car. This turbo is awesome, if your looking to make up some serious power this is a good investment. I was looking for a turbo for a long time and after some research and talking with a few people that know these turbos, I found this turbo to be the best bang for the buck.
in order to use the turbo its full potential you would need to upgrade your:
injectors (stock injectors are limited to about 270hp)
mass air flow sensor (stock MAFS is limited to 250hp)
ECU - (full engine management / tuned ECU / SAFC at the least) you have to compensate for larger mafs and different injectors at least.
you should already have:
FMIC
3" exhuast from the turbo back
boost controller]
fuel pump
the only thing i really need is a boost controller at this point. Im looking to upgrade the injectors, the exhaust manifold, downpipe etc, and of course the turbo.
Had one person notice and comment that the housing on the turbo pictured was stamped with the precision turbos logo on it.
I have inquired and got the answer as to why this is the case.
Garret is responsible for both turbos, but only actually produces the .64 version. The .86 is casted and assembled by Precision turbo, the distributor.
Allegedly. Garrett is not particularly interested in the sport compact market and instead is focusing on the factory turbo and diesel truck turbos. As a result they have allowed and endorsed Precisions action.
Precision also claims that their housing is 2% more efficient that the one garrett was doing last year.
The turbo can be had with the Garrett compressor housing (is that the right term) but it is then rated for about 30hp less and the turbo will be accompanied by a disclaimer that states this.
i had another fiasco tonite with a customer’s turbo.
i spoke with my supplier and directly with Precision Turbo.
Firstly, the part in the picture that is stamped with PRECISION is just a cover. The turbo, in its entirety, is a Garrett turbo however Garrett no longer produces the cover for the .86 a/r 2871R or they do make it but dont send it to the US market.
for one reason or another Garrett sends differing items to different markets, australian, asian, US etc.
the same is true of components for the GT3 series turbos, GT3071R and the GT3076R.
for the turbo in question for my inquiries today (GT3071R) the cove ris made but NOT stamped by Precision Turbo.
for the aluminum covers that Precision provides for applications that Garrett does not, for example this .63 a/r GT3071R with a T3 flange, the Precision cover is bead blasted giving it a sharper appearance than a garrett cover which is not treated.
in the case of the GT2871R .86 if you want the garrett cover for it as opposed to the Precision one pictured in the first post you are essentially getting the same or similar cover as that of the .64 a/r which is made, in-whole includign the cover, by garrett. getting the .86 a/r and requesting the garrett cover actually changes the turbos performance output, lowering it by 10hp, approximately. or in other words, bringing it down closer to the .64 a/r version of the 2871R
there is more info that i gathered to day that is probably entirely useless to most of us including myself, but needless to say, soon i will be able to answer every single question that humans can orate, no just having to do with garrett turbos.
