I love the Z, and I consider keeping it every day, I just dont have time to work on it and I dont want to waste valueable shop space with it sitting rarely touched and eventually covered in parts. Thats your job hehe
FYI for those who, as GT mentioned, for some strange reason would like to put an ‘SR’ in a Z, which I believe is just not a good choice for this car, it is VERY easy to do. The engine bay is HUGE on these cars. With a tiny SR under the hood you could setup a lawn chair in the engine bay!
Visit http://forums.hybridz.org/forumdisplay.php?s=38b53aa13aceb198a827df72c91d37e8&f=92 for more SR240 or KAT 240Z info.
www.hybridz.org is a website dedicated to the restoration, modification and preservation of Z-cars.
http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Datsun_Z_V-8.html This company wrote the book ‘literally’ on how to swap a V8 chevrolet engine into a Z-car.
Now the 240Z needs to be slightly strengthened in the rear subframe area to properly handle the torque of a V8 but it is commonly done and addressed in their book and on various websites such as hybridz.org
I still have my L28 engine for my 77 280z and it is as GT mentioned a reliable engine! My car sat for 5 years in a swamp and basically had no floor or underbody left. Sure enough, we started the engine once we put some clean gas in the car and changed out the oil. It started within 15 seconds!
As for driving it as a winter beater, I wouldn’t recommend it. These cars can, and WILL rust quickly and like the 240sx, is prone to cancer in all to familiar places.
This car has heritage and I hope whomever purchases it, restores it or mods it to have a longer life. And I’m more than happy to help people work on their Z’s.
BTW meastreetspeed website no longer works??
STILL FOR SALE.
and ya, the MSSC site is being re-done. Sorry for the inconvenience.

dont ever make the mistake of putting an american engine into a japanese legend, i dont care how much power, or whatever those engines have i dont care, its just not right
It’s just not right? Have you driven a V8 powered Z? Take a 300 hp LS1, which is readily available including tranny and all required electrics for an average of $2000 and you’ll have a wonderful vehicle to drive. To top it off, you have dealership and aftermarket support for parts.
Granted the L24 engine in this Z may be smooth, but a V8 swap is tops. I am of course slightly biased on the issue, but I can vouch first hand for how easy the swap is.
My 77 280 ran excellent with it’s L28 L-Jetronic fuel injection system but it that system has it’s bugs.
Ethics and brand loyalty aside, if your Z has a hurting engine, a swap is extremely tempting and easy.
wow wheres an LS1 for 2k complete with tranny I want it

i dont think you understand what i said, i dont care who puts a domestic engine into a japanese car, all im saying is that i personally think its the worst thing to do, since i dont like domestic cars. and again, i dont care about the power or what not, these cars are good for nothin unless you want to rent a car and beat the shit out of it, im ignorant when it comes to domestics, so dont get me started…and besides, domestics are worthless, reliablility is 1% compared to the japanese kings-- Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Suzuki, Suburu…and sorry if i forgot any others*** im only stating my opinion
anywayz this is gettin off topic ----- good luck with the sale guy
Hahahaahhaaha, yea… why don’t you ask someone that actually did an LS1 swap how much it costs to source one? Much closer to 8 than 2, not including mount kits, etc… just for motor, tranny, electronics, clutch, etc…
You are! Swapped into a 74 260Z. First inter-family Z project.
For 8 you can source an LS2.
Mounts:
Buy the book, make the mounts.
Electronics?
Again buy the book, integrate required electronics
Never said the whole ‘swap’ would cost 2g’s. We sourced our engine set from Gagnon and sons in Timmins ON. From a wrecked ‘bird’.
Yeah I’m bringing this off topic. Apologies. Good luck with the sale… unless I finally buy it! Afterall, my '77 280z 2+2 is lonely in storage
