General Questions about S-10s

My college roomate called me today and said that he is looking at getting a 95 S-10. The truck has about 105K miles on it and appears to be in pretty good condition. I know that a lot of you guys have S-10s so I figured you could tell me what kind of issues he may be facing. What should be replaced at this point (timing belt?) based on the mileage? And what should a good price be? I don’t know if it is the V6 or the 4 cyl. or if it is 4wd or 2wd, but any ballpark would be helpful.

Thanks in advance guys.

find out more options the price can vary drastically
i say stay away from the stupid vortec spider injection thing if v6

yeah, i replaced one of those in my safari once. what a PITA

lets assume it is a 2wd 4cyl.

i’ld guess prob some where around 2-3k…but ya def get more detail on it

I got a call from my buddy this morning here is what he is looking at:

1995 S-10
4 cyl. w/ 5spd
RWD
Short cab w/ extended bed
Decent shape both inside and out
105K miles
Price is $1,400

If you guys could let me know what maintanence should have been done on this car by 100K or what he should expect to fix, I would really appreciate it. My buddy is pretty tight on cash, but his Saturn is dying on him and he needs to replace it.

Thanks!

1400 doesn’t sound like a bad price…provided it’s relatively clean in/out.

FWIW I bought a '98 S-10 same model/options as the above, brand spanking new, for 9.5K right off the lot

I thought the price was really good too. I think the biggest reason that the price is low is because he is buying it from one of our old college roomates.

I put 140k on mine and it needed almost nothing. Plugs, wires, and a distributor cap at about 100K. Timing chain - so no belt to change. Changed the catalytic converter and o2 sensor once. Never even needed a clutch.

that sounds like its a good deal on it
