gettin a pitbull: protips? UPDATE: PICS

This is honestly my hold up. I REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY dont want to commit to 10+ years of picking up dog shit and walking her in the winter.

Pay one of the neighborhood thugs to do it. Lolz.

I’d love a dog, but money and time are tight.

This is nothing when you consider the plus side of having a dog. You won’t realize this until you actually bond with one, though.

My 2 cents:

  1. For a first-time dog owner, rescued bully breeds can be difficult. There is already a steep learning curve for training, especially with a dog that hasn’t been fully trained from day 1. Pit bulls are great dogs, but they’re not known for being the smartest dogs out there. Training WILL be a challenge for you.

  2. A fenced in yard is almost a must for this breed. Not because they are murderers, but because they require exercise and you shouldn’t allowing the dog to run around an un-fenced yard.

  3. The shit-patrol and the quick 20 minute walks aren’t the hardest part of having a dog. I’ve got no idea what your lifestyle is like, but you quickly realize that getting drunk and crashing on buddy’s couches you can’t do because you have to take care of the dog. Anytime you want to go on a quick overnight trip somewhere, you have to find a dog-sitter or take the dog. If you travel with him, you will have to consider the space requirements of your vehicle. A large crate + the dog will take up a ton of space. Again, these factors are largely dependant on your lifestyle, so take it for what it’s worth.

In the end, it’s EXTREMELY rewarding. You just have to make it work.

I warn you about the above only because I would HATE to see another thread with someone giving up a dog because they didn’t consider what it takes to care for one.

I would disagree Pitbulls are extremely intelligent they just don’t respond well to negative reinforcement when training them and can be stubborn.

You just need to adjust training techniques based on breed.

The other positive is you won’t be getting a puppy since they usually require a lot of work.

Like boardjnky said the biggest concern should be your life style and having time for an animal over everything else.

If you have a fenced yard its nice however if you lead a pretty active lifestyle you can bring the dog running/walking with you.

I had a pit, but just recently had to take him back to the SPCA. He bit my gf’s father and broke the skin :frowning: He came into the fenced in area where the dog was and he bit him. As mentioned, the most important thing is to get the dog as much exercise as possible and socialize with dogs. I can’t stress how important that is for your safety and everyone who comes in contact with it.

It really depends on the dog and how you socialize them with my 3 I have had friends jump my fence and enter my back yard with no issues besides getting licked to death.

Usually the SPCA does a decent amount of temperament testing before they give you a pitbull or any dog for that matter.

Good point on adjusting techniques. I never do negative reinforcement.

Honestly, though, we have a lab retreiver and he is INSANELY smart. He just has intuitive smarts and instincts that are almost difficult to believe at times.

Last note, I am REALLY against running dogs for long distances on pavement. It reaks havoc on their hips. I STRONGLY urge you not to take your dog running with you.

A regular short casual run is one thing, just no crazy distances. You can wear a dog out and hurt it pretty easily, they need water more often and can’t sweat to cool down in addition to hip problems as mentioned.

Trail running for dogs. So much more fun.

Yes!

She’s adorable.

Have fun, you’re going to love having a dog.

Just stopped in to meet her. What a sweetheart. Within a few minutes of meeting her she was sleeping with her head on my foot. Great dog

Nice murder dog, cannot wait for it to taste my blood!

So vicious!

Awesome dog. Doesn’t look too big. About 40 pounds?

If you ever want to let her tear around a fenced in yard she can come wear out my 5 month old golden that has more energy than she knows what to do with.

shes about 70 lbs, and I’ll prolly bring some beers over and take you up on that sooner rather than later. shes awesome with other dogs too.

Cute dog, I’d love to meet her. I like dags!
