GF’s extended family rescued a pitbull off the side of the road. Has been trying to get us to take her in. They had her spayed and got all of her shots up to date. Is good around kids and other animals, is housebroken, is ok in a crate during the day, walks on a leash just fine, doesnt bark much, looks super adorable, they think shes about 1.5 years old…
What do I have to watch out for? Anything to know ahead of time?
I would probably take it to an obedience class I know some places that special in pitbulls…I would make sure your able to give it lots of exercise take it running/walking etc that will help curve any issues.
If you can keep it social with other dogs that is also a plus
I crate 2 of my pitbulls if im out for an extended time and 1 stays out…Most dogs don’t mind being a crate we ended up crateing the two because they end up getting into random things.
2 most important things:
-Tons of exercise.
-Consistently socialize with other dogs and people. (Sounds like this won’t be a problem at all with this dog, though.)
Other than that, it’s a dog like any other. Be good to it.
I dont have any cats, but it currently lives in a house with cats just fine. Hasnt killed any kids that i know of, but if is has they probably deserved it.
I have owned my pit for 7 years not and can not speak highly enough about this breed! He is the most loving playful dog ever. Yes they require A TON OF ATTENTION, but its worth it and you will learn to just treat him/her as a child lol. Mine loves cats and really loves other dogs but…honestly the small ankle biters sometimes scare the living shit out of him. Be prepared to have your bed taken over and your pillow. Best of luck to you I hope you choose to get him!
and I really recommend having a fenced in yard. These dogs should really be getting 2-3 miles worth of walk per day or equivalent exercise (fetch with a ball etc) or they will find ways to amuse themselves which are often destructive or escapist.
My dog follows me around everywhere like attached to the hip. I could just look at him and his tail wags. I don’t give him as muh exercise as stated above and he seems to be pretty good with that. He is 7 years old, I tried to get him to swim today although he doesn’t like it, he did pretty good lol he is asleep right now.
Also the watch out for the tails my dog whips it into everything and it sounds painful but it actually seems more like he has no feeling in it due to the way he whips it into doors and basically anything and everything. I’ve owned him around 7years and he finally got a cut on it a couple weeks ago and he slung blood everywhere all over my pants and everything… I mean he gets so excited when you walk through the door and he wags his tail so hard and fast, you can’t keep a happy dog from being happy and excited… Did this for a couple weeks straight too, but the blood never stains. I guess this is why some people have the tails removed.
