Getting Sponsored

Hey everyone what’s up.

Well Im posting this not just because of what was said about Mike being sponsored and other people not but also to maybe clear up what is really envolved.

Saying someone deserves to be sponsored more then another person is way wrong! No one deserves to be sponsored and it does’nt matter how much car knowledge you have or how done your car is. It really comes down to the company liking YOU as a person, how well they think you’d represent them and what’s in it for them too.

In Mikes case, he had done the SR swap himself, brakes and put it on a How To video. He also had some contacts and a lot of luck to get his deal and I say, way to go. Now no, I don’t know him personally only what I’ve been told through Mael but he seems like a cool guy. Whether his way of coming off or that his personality clashes with yours, is no reason to say he does’nt deserve being sponsored. He worked very hard to get it.

I got lucky myself with Phil and it’s gone from just being sponsored by him to us now being REALLY close friends. Luck plays a big part in getting sponsored as your not just mentioning about your ideas and your car but your also asking them to like you as a person too. I think people tend to not realize that. If the sponsor does’nt like you, it won’t matter what car you have, what’s done to it or what your idea’s are. They won’t sponsor you.

Now for those of you who would like to take a shot at getting a place to sponsor you, here is what I did.

I had to write up a sponsorship proposel and it was a first for me as I have never done it before. So I did the following,

  1. Started off with a brief introduction about myself, family, current job/career and how meaningfull my car hobby is to me.

  2. My Concept. What my end result I wanted was, the car I was using, some motor outlines and roughly how I wanted the car to look.

  3. The car. A much more detailed description of the motor, outside and inside that I wanted. I basiclly painted a picture of the finished product for the sponsor to see in his head. You have to be able to “WOW” them with how original your idea is.

  4. The motor. Break down the motor in to a list of parts you want on it, horsepower and torque goals, projected 1/4 mile times and who’s going to do the work installing it. Be pretty detailed in this section as well. Let them see you’ve really done your home work on parts, reliability and how well all of it will work together. Remember these people know there sh_t too so don’t try to pull one over on them with a lot of BS.

  5. Marketing. Here you will put in where you plan to show the car. At car shows, track events, the street, message boards and so on. Also your target market on who will be interested in looking at your car and wanting there car like yours. An age bracket works well here. You can also talk advertising on your car with regards to stickers and what not if you do or don’t want your ride looking like a driving bill board. Be very detailed here because this is where your sponsor will get a return on there investment in you!

  6. Current Modifications. Just exactly what you have up to this point installed in your car. Don’t lie at all as you may have to prove it.

  7. Coming Soon. Again, pretty self explanitory. Say you’ve ordered a few things or you know you will be buying a couple of things soon, put those down here.

  8. Current Sponsor’s. Only if you have one, then you must mention it here. Some people know people who own mechancial shops, tire shops and so on. So if they give you deals or things free, tell the new prospecitve sponor’s about it. Again be honest as they will check it out.

  9. Sponsorship Needed. Simple put down what it is, EXACTLY, your looking for from the company.

  10. Conclusion. Here just tell them the thought you’ve put in to your project, if your including any addtional information with the proposel as in pictures of your car, parts list or a letter from your current sponsor if you have one. Finish by thanking them for taking the time to read and consider your application for sponsorship.

So that’s about it and as I said, this is what I did. You don’t have to copy it exactly but at least for those of you looking for sponsorship you can use this as somewhat of a guide. It lets you see the work that is envolved in getting sponsored. I thought I would rip this off in a couple of min’s but I found out it was’t that easy.

Well good luck guys and take care.

Easy 8)

Good write-up Bruce, you’re right that although it is somewhat luck that has to with sponsorship. Just like everything else in life, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know, which is fine and dandy since it’s like that everywhere.

I’m not going to get into mike’s case anymore because I added my reply at the end of the thread:

But I do want to add that if you’re only “planning” to go to events, be it show, drift, grip or even regular track days, you have to really WOW the sponsors to get anything. I suggest to think of sponsorship as “in the future” prospective, and attend all the events you can to promote your car and/or yourself as a driver. This is what I’m trying to go for, mind you the only sponsorship I actually want is tires and mounting, otherwise I’m a happy camper

while i understand that the personal relationship with the sponsor is important i would say primarily that the sponsored individual MUST provide a benefit to the sponsorer beyond that of the sponsoors investment in the sponsoree.

if the sponsored individual is not able to generate sales or exposure to the sponsoring firm then the firm would be better off the drop the sponsorship and actually SHOULD if they are smart otherwise it is a needless cost or waste.

for that reason i would say that during your proposal you should make special concern about how you intend to provide benefit beyond the firms contribution to you.

as Dale Carnegie would point out, you must speak in terms of the other persons interests.

Thanks Pavel.

I was’nt trying to bring up anything with regards to Mike more just to let everyone know that it’s not easy to get sponsored. Thats all.

 , tires is also what Im looking for too. Untill then, used tires shops are my sponsor, or rather Im there’s.

Good luck with your search and I hope you get it.

As for what you said bing about the sponsor’s seeing a return, that falls under the marketing section. Thats why I said be VERY detailed there so they can see just how you plan to help get them a return on there investment in you!

Have a good one.

I think sponsorships are good but they have their downfalls too.
For instance I know a guy who Hankook tires sponsors and if they want his car to attend a show the car has to be there no matter what. In a other words they basically Pwn his car now.

Yeah sponsorship isn’t always what it’s made out to be.
