actually, I’ve heard they’ve improved their quality at Kia quite substantially. My sister and her husband bought one brand new back in 99 and that car was a TOTAL piece of shit (no domestic can touch the amount of hard plastic lining the interior). They literally had it in the shop every other week… it just fell apart. They’ve come a long way since then :tup: (not that I would necessarily purchase one, but you gotta give credit where it’s due)

Umm… GM is currently #1 in China (and that’s NOT fleet sales). GM still has 1/5th of the market in the US, and is #1 here, too - all while reducing fleet sales (until recently).
And don’t believe that your sentiments are reflected in other countries - only Americans are stupid enough to believe that people in other countries buy on quality/price alone.
Case in point - Asians have a significant distain for American foodstuffs. in fact, they had RIOTS in South Korea over importing American beef, even though imported beef would be cheaper than domestic. Japanese historically feel that American rice is inferior, even though we can produce it cheaper than almost anyone else (save China).
And Toyota on average sells 8-10 times alone what all the imports combined sell in Japan (including the Europeans). As a matter of fact, for April, 2007 - “13,133 imported vehicles were sold in Japan” (source: Japan Automobile Importers Association). And that means ALL non-JDM makers, in a 5-million car/year market.
So all of this is a serious Domestic Security issue for the US - namely, US jobs. Those cheering for GM to fail should also realize the number of dealers, supplier and parts companies (OEM and aftermarket), finance companies, advertising agencies, etc. that rely on the “Big 3” for their own employment.
And don’t count on the Japanese companies to just “fill in the void” if the Big 3 go under. Toyota itself has said that it relies on suppliers that the Big 3 use for its cars made here. I’m sure that they wouldn’t want to risk investing in new factories for a shrinking market and economy anytime soon - the San Antonio plant has already proved that it’s financially risky to do so.
And it makes me wonder how GM would ever gain appreciation in the domestic market, when a stock Cobalt SS I mentioned above blew the doors off a Mazdaspeed 3 on a racetrack, and for less money. It was even felt to have handled better on the track, too.
I mean come on - where else can you get a direct-injected turbo-four four-door that gets 30mpg highway for $23k?

orders on durable goods are down period. No void to fill because fewer people are buying cars, washing machines, you name it - foreign or domestic. The last estimate I read was that 700 dealerships would close in the next year. And i don’t think anyone is “cheering” for GM to fail. These are sad fucking times. And it is just the beginning of the great big suck. It’s going to suck worse than a hooker with a dustbuster.
If you want to go american, invest in IGT…they make slot machines…Jack Daniels is another one. Casinos and drugs are the only industries that will see a growth when people are down and out. I’d tell you to invest in cocaine too, but that isn’t domestic product now, it is.
Chrysler has the 300 AWD. Ford has an AWD Taurus and Fusion.
GM has an AWD Saab 9-3, Cadillac STS and CTS.

Dave, Don’t be so naieve. I think most of us on here (>22yo) can appreciate the affect that would have on this country. We would all be fucked and looking at a great depression all over again. As far as sales is concerned yes. But they are hemoraging cash, FAST. GM has been taping into every available source for funds for 9 months now. They are losing money on day to day operations and have been for a while. Although their sales are only off 11.9% over the last 12 months their income is down 2,073%. Its not about moving cars, its about being profitable and they are currently far from it right now. Their net profit margin is -37%The cars they are selling are not making any money. 85% of all the cars they are selling right now, they are doing so at a loss! You can’t make that up in volume. Their cash cow for years was their trucks. And right now they just aren’t moving enough of them.
This is not a jab at GM, my family has as much, if not more to lose if GM fails than anyone on this board. I’m just looking at what’s going on and its not good, not good at all. Persoanlly I’m scared shitless, but there’s no point in ingnoring the issue either. It is not only possible, but very likely GM will be bankrupt in 6 months (if they aren’t already), unless things start to come around very soon.
I wouldn’t drive any of those except maybe the CTS, I didn’t know that came in AWD.
