i thought the same thing (still do) but i heard they got something that prevents torque steer
Cobra.
But of course the cobra was quicker, and cheaper to mod. I’m a cobra nutt rider since 02 though…
Just cause it was 400hp, doesn’t meant it ran 11s… it was a pig, like the other cars with 350+ hp … but since when does HP = $$??? Just cause it had some decent power, doesn’t mean it gets to be made shitty, i like the seats, but that was about it. The styling was very mild… not something Pontiac needed at the time, and the price wasn’t worth it.
Would you rather have a GTO or a Charger? Challenger? 300C? Cobra? Used Vette? Thats just domestic, I won’t even waste my time bringing in the imports in the 30k zone.
Cadillacs have had V8’s in Front drive the 80’s
here comes 07 or 08 TA
So uhh then why do people try to make 400+ hp civics
He said TORQUE steer. Not horsepower steer
um, when you get a V8 you get a gas pedal too, if you don’t want torque steer … stay off the gas. If you want to go fast, mash it.
I don’t see the problem. Would a supercharged V6 be better? Cause thats not popular or anything.
I liked the GTO, and was seriously considering getting one this spring. I made sense to me because:
- 400 HP, 400 TQ, RWD, 6 Speed.
- Body style that as a responsible young professional with a budding consulting business I could park in any companies lot and not look stupid stepping out in a suit. F-Bods, Mustangs, Vettes etc do not make the right first impression when you’re using them as a daily driver.
- To get similar straight line speed/comfort in a european you’re talking M5 prices. Sure, it won’t handle like an M5 but that’s nothing a few grand in suspension tweaks couldn’t almost fix.
I never cared that it didn’t look like the old GTO. I hate the old muscle car look. Since it did piss so many people off though GM should have just given it a new name. Since anyone who knows cars knew it was a Monaro they should have just called it the Pontiac Monaro.
I do find it funny on a site full of 13-14 second “fast” cars that so many people would call the GTO a dog. Bone stock, with a warranty and on street tires, 0-60 4.8, 1/4 mile in 13.3 @ 107 (caranddriver.com). And it’s an LS2, so if you want more the parts are out there.
13-14 second? Your being way too forgiving.
There is a reason why BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Porsche and every other high end or high speed manufacture don’t make FWD cars. FWD sucks when you have a lot of power.
Hell, recently I had a rental 06 Grand Prix with the NA 3800 III and even it had enough torque to make turning + hard accelerating almost impossible without wheelspin. 200 HP in a car that size would have a lot better chance of putting the power to the pavement if it were RWD. Going through an S-curve at 30 MPH you should not be able to floor it and smoke the tires on a 200 HP car.
If you’re GM and you’re really terrified of losing out on the snowbelt market, do what Dodge did. Make the platform RWD with an AWD option (ala Magnum, 300C).
I think they were a steal. on a site where most people would do suspension mods over aesthetic add-ons, the 400 bhp goat is a loser? nope, no bias here… :gotme:
although, I gotta agree, they should have been $29k - tops.
I know what your saying, but haven driven a few high HP FWDs… I know that you only use 300fwtq when you want to. I know it is better off going to the rear wheels… or in my case all the wheels, but SSEIs and GTPs are pretty sweet for what they are.
BTW - You can hardly get a new Mustang GT for under 30
I spent two weeks with that Grand Prix, and after that much time I can say without a doubt that if you like “sporting” driving FWD and decent HP/TQ are not a good mix. I understand controlling wheelspin with proper application of throttle, but when you’re perfectly exiting an apex and you’re 1/2 on the throttle because you’re at the wheelspin threshold it’s annoying knowing you could be hammer down if the correct wheels were getting the power.
On the flip side the car was COMPLETELY idiot proof. Go into a corner to fast, understeer. Do something dumb like jump off the throttle and get on the brakes in that same corner, more understeer. Floor it mid corner while trying to turn tighter, you guessed it, inside tire spin + our old friend understeer. The way most people drive I guess there is something to be said for that.
Look at the GP/Bonne crowd… do they seem like corner carvers, or like they are on their way to BINGO?
BTW - GTO - Most Powerful Car in its Class.
Starting @ $31,999 … eh…
I’m not positive, but i’m fairly confident cobra’s werent under 30 brand new. A 31k sticker from GM by no means = paying that much. And yes, I was considering buying one over those cars. the interior is not your typical pontiac.
you could grab an 03, in late 02 for 32k out the door.
like I said, i’ve been in a couple, the seats are nice, but the rest is def typical GM.
Lot of car for the money, though they would have sold many more if it were $5K cheaper and had more interesting styling.
:word:
they could have easily made a v6 option available to reduce the price some if they wanted to, they have been doing that forever on the f-body platform. theres enough posers out there that just want the look but not the hp
the car also might have been better off with a different name, as most of the backlash about it was based on the fact that it wasnt considered a “proper” use of the GTO name
all it would have realy needed to aviod that would have ben a better front bumper , but that would have probably required new hood and fenders also … so i donno
Werd. Ive been saying that since that thing came out. The Monaro in Australia, i thought it was hot. But to call that thing a GTO…no way. Have you ever seen the Ute SS? Same damn car but with a truck bed. And GM was planning on saying “OMG look the El Camino is back!!!11!one!!” But when people were so pissed at the Monero being called the GTO, GM abandoned this plan.
